Plague of wild pigs has U.S. authorities squealing
Reuters ^ | AUGUST 24, 2013 | KEVIN MURPHY

A few years ago, Jim Vich would not have dreamed of setting up an elaborate trap to catch wild hogs.

But that was before Oklahoma was invaded by a plague of pigs that devour crops, uproot pastures, destroy wildlife habitats, spread disease to humans and animals, kill trees and even knock over cemetery stones.

When I was in high school one of my best friend’s family caught wild pigs for sport and bacon. They had a pack of dogs and would hunt them on the Eglin AFB reservation.

The dogs would bay them and the people would grab them by the hind legs, put them in a pen in their pickup and take them home. They would prepare the males and feed them for a few months before slaughtering them.

Their dogs were all scarred up but the humans had never been injured.

Helicopters and AR-15’s modified for auto use, the video’s are on YouTube, and they are for hire. Why not for this situation?

“A mechanical engineer by training, Vich said he has trapped hogs for five or six years and sometimes nabs 9 to 12 pigs at a time, which he loads into a livestock trailer and takes home to sell to neighbors for meat.”

If he has an oversupply, he should export them to Saudi Arabia. Maybe they can start an annual “Roundup at Mecca!”

Like wild dogs, it does not take long for feral pigs to become a real danger. While still smaller (200#) than their Wild Boar cousins (3-400#), like them they can be very dangerous to be near and will destroy agriculture unbelievably fast. Mother sows are like mother bears, close encounters can be deadly.

These that are being trapped are probably no more than two generations feral / wild. Still not a job for the faint of heart! Ever heard of the terms “Pig Sticker” and “Boar Spear”? Nice SHARP spear with a crosspiece behind the head to keep that sucker from getting TOO CLOSE! Best used from horseback with a well trained horse! Better would be a heavier caliber rifle, .270 Winchester and a scope.

Pigman and Uncle Ted were doing exactly this the other day on the Sportsman Channel. 290+ pigs in one afternoon. :-)

I do real well with a .22-250. My brother prefers the .223.

I don't take anything over 100#, that's a personal preference, and the limits of convenient processing for me.

I’m sure the helicopter-based pig hunting outfits will expand up into Oklahoma, if the state law allows. Texas had to amend its hunting laws to permit use of helicopters (most states have a “no hunting from a moving vehicle” statute).

In the winter here you rarely find the deer that left the mess on the road.

Last year somebody hit a huge doe right up from my place and by the time I went home, grabbed a Hefty and got back, she was gone.

Middle of the night and somebody still snagged her first.

The dogs don’t care how their meat died.

:)
