San Diego has a long reputation as a mecca of political conservatism, but that image could crumble after the resignation Friday of its mayor, Bob Filner, in the face of allegations of sexual harassment. His replacement will be a gay man, making San Diego the nation's second-largest city to be led by an openly gay person.
The City Council voted 7-0 Friday to approve a deal to accept Filner's resignation in exchange for covering some of his legal expenses related to the harassment allegations involving city employees. A spokesman for California Attorney General Kamala Harris said Friday that Harris has opened a criminal investigation into Filner but declined to elaborate.
According to the City Charter rules, City Council President Todd Gloria will become acting mayor when Filner, the city's first Democratic mayor in 20 years, leaves office Friday. An election will be held within 90 days.
Including Gloria, at least four of the potential candidates lining up to replace Filner are gay, including one Republican. It's another significant milestone in the ascending political power of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community when the nation's eighth-largest city - and one with a well-earned conservative reputation - has a gay chief executive.

Our City Manager was being paid $400K a year (town of 200,000) and had a month left on his contract. The entire council was set to buy out his contract for another $400,000... !!
Nothing but a gift. After an outcry they finally decided to make him an advisor for a year for the money. Pure insanity.

I did that in Dec 2000, but arranged to take my job with San Diego level salary with me. Life was great until Obama took office. The work I did from my home office evaporated. I left my family at home in Idaho and spent 4 years living in a small room to have work in San Diego. That work ended at the end of April this year. I'm living off the accrued vacation from 3 1/2 years of not taking time off. That will run out by Oct 1st. Just in time for the new contract award...I hope. Back to the little room in San Diego...900 miles from my home in Idaho.
My point is that you should have a source of income in mind when you move to Idaho. There are few employers offering great salaries here. Most employment is retail and restaurant. Not much opportunity to ply my software/hardware engineering skills aside from the Idaho National Labs. Half the pay I earn now and a life that involves a bus ride at 5:30 AM each day to work and returns at 5:30 PM. Many of my neighbors live that way.
The first line in that article would make me think Filner was a conservative if I didn’t know better.
