Teen who shot baby in face while robbing his mom counted down from five before he pulled the trigger

The teen accused of shooting a toddler between the eyes during a robbery attempt counted down from five before firing, his alleged accomplice testified today after pointing him out as the shooter.

Dominique Lang testified that he ran into De'Marquise Elkins on the morning of the March 21 slaying. A short while later as the two walked together, they saw Sherry West with a stroller.

Lang says Elkins walked to West and demanded her purse before pulling out a gun. When West refused to hand the purse over, he hit her in the face with it and threatened her baby.

'The baby was in the stroller screaming,' Lang said.

Elkins shot Sherry West in the leg with his .22 caliber handgun, he testified, and then shot the 13-month-old baby Antonio Santiago.

De'Marquise Elkins is charged with murder, child cruelty, attempted armed robbery and multiple counts of aggravated assault in connection to the March 21 shooting.

If convicted, Elkins will not face the death penalty because he was 17 at the time of the killing, too young under Georgia law to be executed.

Prosecutors have also accused Elkins of shooting Wilfredo Calix Flores outside a local church ten days before the child was killed.

““Imagine how she must feel now knowing that her son would almost certainly be alive if she just gave up her purse.””

“Your dreaming.”

Really. If they were going to kill her anyway why not just shoot her in the head and take the purse without all the jibber jabber?

What kind of moron thinks this is the mothers fault? That the countdown is perfectly reasonable in his profession?

Perhaps, just perhaps the mother might have kept the teen from murdering the baby by submitting to his every demand. We should see to it that she answers to the law for this heinous crime. As it is, she is responsible for the destruction of two lives. Her baby and the child who had the courage to confront and challenge her privilege.

This poor, benighted youth is now the subject of our concern. How might his wretched life might still be salvaged. White privilege should be on trial instead of this black child.

(There are millions of people - not all of them black - who think this way. Actually, some are in the White House and DOJ. However, I’m not one of them. Please don’t get too personal.)

I would suggest getting rid of that stupid old “no cruel and unusual punishment” bit.

Honestly, the beauty of that statement is that it is very subjective to the sentiments of the governed. All we really have to do is change the perception of "cruel and unusual".

We do get a lot of trolls. By that I mean people whose views are substantially at odds with the conservative values of the FR family. One of those values is the belief that bad guys win only when the good guys don’t put up a real fight. In the real situation here, there was no Glock in the purse, as far as anyone knows. So it was a no-win situation for the mom. With someone that cold, it was purely random whether compliance would have prevented the shooting. Your affirmative statement that she should feel guilt about that is flat wrong. She did not pull the trigger. As conservatives, we reject the false guilt that drives the victim mentality. Sometimes, no matter how you play your hand, bad things happen anyway, and it makes no sense to waste time blaming the wrong person. That is, IMHO, what has earned you suspicion as a troll. Time will bear out whether that suspicion is justified.

Your looking for rationalism from a sociopath. The kind that will blow you away if you look at them cross-eyed. As you can see, he was fully prepared to murder a child in a stroller. But you go ahead and rationalize it any way you want if it makes you feel better. If it wasn’t this kid it would have been some other poor soul down the road that got it from this animal.

All to save a purse with maybe $50 in it. IMO that’s not a smart move.

Fool. It's not about a purse, $50, or any other worthless piece of property... it's about dignity, liberty, domination, and control. The sooner Americans get that simple fact, the sooner we'll be able to turn the corner back towards an orderly society.

I agree, but if you are unarmed and someone is holding a gun on your kid and wants your wallet, what are you going to do?

Thanks for your reasoned response. To clarify, I did not state that she SHOULD feel guilty, but that she would feel it. For the record in my youth I was robbed 3 times, twice with a knife and once with a gun. None of those guys got ANYTHING because I was young, proud and stupid. These days if a guy pulls a gun on me and I had one of my grandkids with me they would get my wallet, even though I CCW regularly and have plenty of training and practice to use it effectively. I have no interest in starting a gunfight near my gkids if it can be avoided. If they are in danger I will defend them with my life but not for anything I can easily replace. The gkids safety come first over my pride. If anyone doesnt like it that’s too bad.

Seriously, that is the position the mother was in. Dont dodge the question. Do you give up the wallet or not?

I would use every means available to me to defend the life of my child and myself. However, my confidence that the thug would spare my child's life should I give up my wallet, on a scale of 1 to 10, is somewhere around 0.00001.

Dont dodge the question.

However, that doesn't change the fact that it's not about a wallet, purse, or $50. It's about "commandeering of the victim's person and liberty. If the individual's dignity lies in the fact that he is a moral agent engaging in actions of his own will, in free exchange with others, then crime always violates the victim's dignity. It is, in fact, an act of enslavement. Your wallet, your purse, or your car may not be worth your life, but your dignity is; and if it is not worth fighting for, it can hardly be said to exist." Personally, present two to center-of-mass and one to the head.
