A bicyclist who fatally struck a 71-year-old man who was crossing the street in San Francisco's Castro neighborhood was sentenced Thursday to three years of probation and 1,000 hours of community service.

Chris Bucchere, 37, cut a deal with prosecutors last month, pleading guilty to felony vehicular manslaughter and avoiding a jury trial that could have exposed him to prison time if he had been convicted.

The charge was the most serious ever brought in the U.S. against a cyclist in a fatal crash with a pedestrian, said District Attorney George Gascón. He said the victim's family did not want Bucchere to be locked up.

In an online missive posted just hours after the crash, Bucchere expressed little remorse for his behavior. His irreverent account focused instead on his broken helmet, his own relatively minor injuries and the police seizure of his bike.

But before that, a motorist reported seeing Bucchere fly through several red lights and stop signs along Divisadero Street leading up to the intersection, said police Capt. Denis O'Leary, head of the hit-and-run detail that investigated the collision.

Fatso should've been convicted of a felony.

At a park I walk in a public park frequently, and as a result of many encounters have developed a theory.

The bicycle seat pushes directly up on a person’s anal area. Normally this is only a minor annoyance and may lead to some chaffing. However in some cases, this is also where the person’s brain is located and the results are to make them even dumber than they are normally.

Many of these people also wear helmets, which is a waste of money and time since there is obviously nothing worth protecting underneath the helmet.

I’m surprised the Castro guy didn’t beg to be sent to an all male prison.

Yes, he got off easy. But prison is expensive, and probably should be reserved for those who, if not locked up, will likely re-offend.

This guy was a selfish jerk, but he’s not a career criminal. Hopefully the victim’s family will go after him in civil court. The family of the dead man wanted to give him a second chance. Let’s hope he doesn’t squander it.

I won't be surprised, though, when he does.

Unfortunately the victim's forgiving families are rarely the ones who will be the victims of the perp's future crimes. It is society as a whole that is being protected by locking up criminals.

I’m a cyclist, but I sure couldn’t be as nice to this jackwagon as the victims family is. I’d lock his ass up for at least a couple of years.

Plea Bargaining is bullshit....if you commit a crime, you pay for it to the full extent of the Law. Yes; there’s a risk to go to an OJ Jury but there is NO WAY criminals should be allowed to walk away with a slap on the wrist, when the victim has been killed or mutilated or rendered vegetative.

Second, Lawyers who are appointed by the State should NOT be allowed to Plea Bargain, period.

Ditto, another cyclist here.

We had a guy hit some chick on the Katy Trail here in Dallas couple of years ago, she died. Jogger wearing her earbuds stopped in the middle of the trail and did a 180 without considering there might be bike traffic approaching from behind. Pretty much a tragedy, they let the guy off. I can’t help thinking he was probably going too fast, I ride that trail sometimes and it is always packed with people walking their dogs and jogging and such. Still, it is sad that girl died.

I ran over a kid one time. I was on the White Rock Lake trail, not being too much of a nuisance but I saw this kid on a bike (like 5-6 maybe, and all alone) riding toward me. He zigged one way, I tried to go the other and he went that way so I zagged and he swerved right into my path. I knocked him over backwards, felt like a total schmuck, but in all honesty that young boy should have been towing a parent to keep him out of trouble. And I should have slowed down, but I didn’t, so I was a schmuck I guess.

I got him up and dusted him off and away he went. I never saw an adult that might have been his, and he didn’t seem hurt, but I still remember it 30 years later.

But I know how city cyclists can be on the street, they often treat pedestrians the way cars treat them. Sounds to me like this cat was in the wrong and deserves any punishment he gets.
