Yes, he got off easy. But prison is expensive, and probably should be reserved for those who, if not locked up, will likely re-offend.

This guy was a selfish jerk, but he’s not a career criminal. Hopefully the victim’s family will go after him in civil court. The family of the dead man wanted to give him a second chance. Let’s hope he doesn’t squander it.

Unfortunately the victim's forgiving families are rarely the ones who will be the victims of the perp's future crimes. It is society as a whole that is being protected by locking up criminals.
