BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) A federal aviation official says a large UPS cargo plane has crashed near an airport in Birmingham, Ala.
Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman Kathleen Bergen tells The Associated Press that the A300 plane crashed on approach to the airport before dawn Wednesday. [snip]
:(
I do wonder out loud about the Libyan MANPADS and if this was a test run.
It was. AL.com has a live feed. It is out in a large field/pasture area. I can see one farm silo off to the right, lots of trees.

Did cross my mind too.
Crash site in relation to airport. (plane not lined up?)

Mostly businesses in the area. Reports said it crashed in a field...no reports of casualties on the ground. Even though I was asleep and 12 or so miles from the crash I don't think we were having any bad weather at the time. Light rain and clouds, no thunderstorms.
Yup. Pics coming in now are daylight pics and it looks pretty much like pastureland.
May have been weather related. Radar showing storms in that area.
AA flew the A-300 early in the decade; recall the crash after takeoff from JFK in 2001..
Feel so bad for those families and crew.
Looking at the flight chart, I see within minutes of the crash, several approx 3-4 thousand drops in altitude. I guess I’d need to check the history to see if that is a normal approach to that airport.
Wind shear possibly? no delays reported at the airport, no warnings either? (at least on flightaware)
The pictures of the plane in the field are eerily reminiscent of the recent Denzel Washington movie, “Flight.”
Possibel..but I think Atlanta has Doppler which would have picked it up..
Likely weather related but I wouldn't rule out the possibility of a shoulder fired missile. It's been almost a year since they say 400 have gotten into the hands of Jihadists. Time enough for some to make it inside the US it would seem to me. They like to strike when and where it's least expected.
The flightaware screen was showing storms to the west at the time of crash, with just light showers around the airport.
They weren’t lined up with the runway which looks to be SW/NE and the crash site is about (eyeballing) 1/2 mile or so to the north.
Exactly. If that happens to be the case, the Administration is laying down the fire on board theory and all supporting MSM stories right now.
A sad ping to the Alabama ping list.
If anyone wants to be added or deleted from this list, please let me know.
Yep, another flight 800 cover up in the works if that’s the case.
But why hit a cargo plane? Terrorists want the maximum body count..
