Coal country begs Obama for mercy as hundreds of coal plants ready for closing

Coal industry lobbyists and politicians have been urging the Obama administration to ease up on its regulatory agenda and craft carbon dioxide emission rules that would allow the coal industry to survive.

All the while, reports indicate that hundreds of coal plants are slated to be shut down in the coming years.

The unveiling of President Obama’s plan to cut carbon dioxide emissions from coal-fired power plants earlier this summer stoked the fears of coal supporters who have already been hit hard by stricter environmental regulations.

However, the industry is not going down without a fight.

Coal lobbyists met with White House officials at the end of July, the Hill newspaper reports, to ask the administration to consider a plan that would allow new coal plants to be built.

Earlier this year the Obama administration put forward rules that would have effectively banned building new coal plants, unless they utilized carbon capture technology.

“In Kentucky, coal is not just an energy source, it’s a way of life,” reads a letter from 50 Kentucky Republican and Democratic state legislators, urging Obama to reconsider new rules for carbon emissions limits. “In Kentucky alone, the loss would measure in the billions of dollars — both from declines in the industry and what are predicted to be steep increases in energy costs.”

Not much sympathy here - Obama announced during his run in 2008 that he’d bankrupt any new, and by implication as many old, coal companies as he could - yet many went right ahead in lock-step and voted for him as well as other ‘rats who give him the support he needs to pass his hate-legislation, like what’s his name Manchin from West Virginia - when and if the people in this country ever wake up and learn to listen to what they’re being told by politicians, we might all eventually get out of the ninth grade, government-wise......

Coal can be used to produce ethanol, 30% more cheaply than corn based ethanol. Except it is illegal. Congress can change one sentence in existing law and get the coal industry started again.

First of all, where does he get the authority to decide what plants get to be opened where.

Second, lots of coal miners voted for obama knowing he wanted to destroy their livelihood.

I know WV went for Juan McCain in ‘08 and I believe for Romney in ‘12. Probably KY as well. Maybe not union-miners personally, but the states went (R) so even if the miners voted for The Won, it ended up not doing any harm.

OH and PA did go for O, but it was the cities in both cases that did it for him, which is not where miners tend to live.

The tender mercies of the wicked are cruel. Proverbs

When the leaders are wicked the people groan, when the leades are righteous, the people rejoice. Proverbs

Pretty much sums up what we’re experiencing. And what has always been true.

You do realize that when we talk to Liberals, we are actually talking to the Americanized version of the Useful Idiot?

The difference is that the Useful Idiots of Stalin's era loved Mother Russia, while our own Useful Idiots hate their own Country, America as founded.

They see nothing, they hear nothing and they will be the most surprised when things go South. They walk on the Railroad Track and never hear or see the Train that kills them.

Kruschev had it right, they beat us without firing a shot. What he didn't envision was that his own Country would attempt to emulate America while we as a Nation have chosen the opposite path. In my wildest dreams I would never have foreseen such a thing happening in my Lifetime.

Very well put. You nailed it.

I worked for a conservative Think Tank in the early ‘80’s and got to know Yuri Bezmenov, a KGB defector. He loved America and hated the Useful Idiots.

As I have been telling the ignorami on this forum for years, the primary coal producing states: Wyoming, West Virginia, and Kentucky voted for McCain/Palin and Romney/Ryan. Furthermore, western Pennsylvania also voted majority against 0bama.

You're right and this included GOP Majority in Congress Tennessee and GOP two House Majority in our State General Assembly Tennessee. Of course we have LaModerate Alexander who loves the EPA so he doesn't count and in a pinch Obama can always count on Corker also.

Unfortunately with our power rates TVA has been spending BILLIONS on EPA MANDATED UPGRADES to coal fired steam plants. Billions spent only to see Barry and his precious EPA loyalist closing them down. This is a punishment to coal producing and cola power generation dependent areas for not supporting Obama. The miners political Union Loyalties left the area during the Clinton era.

It’s funny how so many people smarter than you and I keep screwing the world with such seeming impunity. One blatant screw up after another.

Of course we have a number of supposed high info voters right here on FR that seem to want more of it. They keep voting for it and making excuses when the people they elect act just like Democrats.

Perhaps those pols aren’t so dumb afterall. Doesn’t say a lot for the rest of us though.

Union miners voted for Obama because anyone on unemployment and welfare needs Democrats. Since Obama lost in the coal contry, I’d doubt many non union votes. A map that was published in the Guardian showed the counties in which active mines are located indicate majority republican support. For anyone who has followed the UMW, that’s remarkable.
