This is the last Slate article that will refer to the Washington NFL team as the Redskins.
For decades, American Indian activists and others have been asking, urging, and haranguing the Washington Redskins to ditch their nickname, calling it a racist slur and an insult to Indians. They have collected historical and cultural examples of the use of redskin as a pejorative and twice sued to void the Redskins trademark, arguing that the name cannot be legally protected because its a slur. (A ruling on the second suit is expected soon; the first failed for technical reasons.) A group in the House of Representatives also recently introduced a bill to void the trademark. The team has been criticized from every different direction, by every kind of person. More than 20 years ago, Washington Post columnist Tony Kornheiser, no politically correct squish, urged the team to abandon the name. Today, the mayor of Washington, D.C.the mayor!goes out of his way to avoid saying the teams name.
Why, then, has nothing changed? Because the choice of the teams name belongs to one person, Washington owner Daniel Snyder. He has brushed off the controversy with arm waves at tradition, competitiveness, and honor. He recently told USA Today, Well never change the name. Its that simple. NEVERyou can use caps. Earlier this year, some Redskins flunky was assigned the job of locating high school teams around the country called Redskins, and found 70 of them, which proved very little except that the Redskins are capable of spreading a bad example to the young. (A Google search of Redskins nickname and high school turns up story after story of schools dropping the nickname.) And this May, the team pathetically trotted out a guy named Chief Dodson to explain that his people were quite honored ...

That’s awesome! LOL!
They actually play in Maryland...so how about the Baltimore Baraqqis?
But no issues with the Vikings or Celtics.
Change all names to European warrior clans and then they can complain about the lack of inclusion.
Using the Rush Limbaugh environmentalist whacko method, the Miami Dolphins should beat them every time.
But then, doesn't this sort of thing nicely demonstrate my point that egalitarian collectivists (communist & socialist advocacy groups) are primarily compulsion, not reason, driven? (See Compassion Or Compulsion?)

LOL, I’d love to see some team use the name “Mau Mau”.
The “New England Jingoists”?
I recommend the Redskins change their name to Foreskins...
...someone said they should be renamed the ‘Red Inks’...I’m all for that...
...in other developments, I see the word ‘popcorn’ and ‘foreskin’ being used in the same thread ...remember ‘Ball Four’, when Joe Pepitone put a piece of popcorn under his foreskin, and went to the team doctor claiming a new ‘sexual’ disease...
...Bouton might have been a loony liberal, but he was a funny writer...
When I first moved to Raleigh it was a big Redskin town. That was my nickname for them as they weren't one of my favorites.
As for the name, having a team named for something is a honor. Something the team admires for bravery, strength, etc.
Any teams wanting to be known as the Vinnies, my blessing. :^)
I have a lot of trouble keeping up with the PC rules.
For example, why is it that “people of color” is politically correct but “colored people” is not (unless you are the NAACP in which case it is still ok)?
Painty-Waists you must mean.
Panty-wastes are a whole other ball game.
lol
Today it’s team names. Tomorrow it’ll be something else. The people who do this complaining really hate everything about Western Civilization, and are trying to destroy it, one little thing at a time.
Hail to the Redskins!
Hail Victory!
Braves on the Warpath!
Fight for old D.C.!
Changing the name would ruin the fight song. Screw slate and the rest of them.
Will the last whining Injun please turn out the lights when you leave the room?
...I’m not sure, but I think Russell Means has assumed room temperature...
See How To Recognize The Bigot In The Argument.
This attack is part of something very serious & very, very evil. Concern for American Indian Nations is no part of the motivation.
