During a May appearance on Rachel Maddow Lean Forward Senator Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) said gun rights are not "God-given" and any claim that the Founding Fathers wanted U.S. citizens armed so they could repel a tyranny "is insane."
Murphy said, "The Second Amendment is not an absolute right, not a God-given right. It has always had conditions upon it like the First Amendment has."
This is disturbing language from a sitting Senator, especially when you consider that the First Amendment opens with the phrase "Congress shall make no law" and the Second Amendment states that the right to keep and bear arms "shall not be infringed."

Apparently the senator has never read the enormous amount of letters that the Founders produced SPECIFICALLY STATING THAT GUNS ARE THE RIGHTS OF CITIZENS TO DEFEND THEMSELVES AGAINST TYRANNY.

Nonsense. The amendment is borrowed from the “English Bill of Rights” of 1688, which expressly provided for an armed
citizenry so that the people could defend themselves against the monarch (and his standing army).
In fact, it eschewed the idea of the king having any large standing army, in favor of his having to rely on the armed populace (militia) instead.
This was so that the king would never be able to threaten
the populace with force.
The British colonies in North America adopted these concepts almost immediately; and later wrote them into the US Constitution.
Government was never to be allowed to disarm the people and leave the government (king) with the only armed force around.
This comment is worse, and of far greater scope, than anything Akin or Mourdock said.
Self defense is not a God given right? Wow, better tell all those jelly fish in the sea to remove their poison, tell all those turtles to remove their shells, tell all those porcupines to remove their needles because Racheal Maddow has come to the conclusion that she is greater than God and they must all die rather than use the tools God has given them for self defense.
