Alex Rodriguez Suspended Through 2014, Still Belongs In The Hall Of Fame
FORBES ^ | August 5, 2013 | Chris Smith

Posted on 08/06/2013 6:07:23 AM PDT by NotYourAverageDhimmi

After weeks of waiting, MLB has finally announced its Biogenesis suspensions. Twelve players have been hit with 50-game suspensions, and Alex Rodriguez has been issued a suspension through the 2014 season for a total 211 games. Because A-Rod’s suspension will come under the Joint Drug Agreement, he can still play while he appeals the punishment and will be in the New York Yankees’ lineup tonight for the first time this season.

Many have questioned how the suspension will impact Rodriguez’s “legacy” (see here, here and here), and it’s a subject that will undoubtedly be debated for years to come. What’s not up for debate, though, is that A-Rod has been among baseball’s best players since he took over as the Seattle Mariners’ starting shortstop in 1996, and he ranks among the most dangerous hitters of all time.

Rodriguez is currently 16th in career wins above replacement (Fangraphs) with 114, ranking ahead of Rickey Henderson, Jimmie Foxx, Mike Schmidt and Carl Yastrzemski. He is fifth all-time in home runs with 647, and he ranks second behind only Barry Bonds among those who played during the steroid era. In other words, of all the sluggers who used – or allegedly used – performance enhancers, only one has gone deep more times than A-Rod. His three MVP awards are tied for second-most in history, and in 19 seasons he’s ranked among the top ten in MVP voting ten times.

Put more simply, Rodriguez absolutely dominated his era and is an all-time great. If not for steroid allegations, Rodriguez would not only be a shoo-in for the Hall of Fame, but a likely choice for first-ballot enshrinement.

Are you kidding me? Which stats do you consider not legit? I guess if he was a lifetime .260 hitter, with a 125 hr, 80 3b, 250 2b, 1200 total hits he would be considered legit. Please see my earlier post and exain to me how any of the the cheating arguments can be explained. Do a side by side comparison of any of the big names that have been tainted against the all time legends of the game and then post your analysis of which stats aren’t legit. The only one that will stand out is home runs, but then how many of those came against the best pitchers versus some shlub middle deliver or flash in the pan 2-5 year guys?

Pete Rose broke a rule after he retired as a player and was a manager. He only bet on his team to win. Never accused of cheating or throwing games. Seems like a good way to motivate someone, if you win you make money, you lose and you don’t get paid. IMHO, Pete has been punished long enough. He was a great player.

Pete Rose got pinched for betting on his own team TO WIN, and he’s still not in the hall of fame. A-Roid’s flat out cheated to give himself and edge. He should never be allowed in.

Yeah Pete Rose IMO was the greatest all-around player the game has seen - or at least a darn good argument can be made so.

And he did not use PEDs. He could just do it.

He he he nobody thinks gambling is good for the game LOL. But a comparison between the punishments for gambling and years of PED usage shows that gambling has a much, much greater punishment than years of PEDs.

That is what the problem is IMO.

I would think that whatever the punishment for a manager betting to win would not be as severe as a player cheating with PEDs for years.

just sayin'...

Pete Rose didn't cheat.

A-Rod is just another cheater who decided that rules apply to the little people but not to him.
(must be a democrat)

He does not belong in the Hall Of Fame.

He belongs in the Hall Of Shame.

Players are judged by their statistics, if you make a claim that he is not legit, than what are you basing that on?

if he was getting a “boost” from the PEDs then can someone explain to me his .263 post season career average.,p> Maybe because he really is only a .263 hitter....

Saying players are judged by their statistics is too simplistic. What you're asking for is a Fantasy Baseball Hall of Fame. Here's what people judge when voting players into the real world Baseball Hall of Fame:

5. Voting: Voting shall be based upon the player's record, playing ability, integrity, sportsmanship, character, and contributions to the team(s) on which the player played.

Pete Rose belongs in the Hall of Fame as a player. He belongs in the hall of shame as a manager.

His conduct was far more detrimental to himself than to the integrity of the game; that is how. Baseball’s gambling policy is posted in every locker room - someone surely must have read it to Charlie Hustle at some point. Players have to sign a statement affirming they know the rule. Assuming Petey put his X on it, he knew exactly what he was doing. Baseball clearly and constantly has made gambling a greater sin than boozing and carousing.
