More than 80 lawmakers have called on the Obama administration to allow gay men to donate blood.
The lawmakers say the administration should change what they say is an "outdated" policy.
Eighty-two lawmakers in the House and Senate signed on to the letter, including Sens. Tammy Baldwin (D-Wis.), Mike Enzi (R-Wyo.) and Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.). Enzi was the only Republican to sign the letter.
They said Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Kathleen Sebelius should re-evaluate blood donation criteria that ban gay men from donating blood for life.

” We learned the lesson of Arkansas. Then Governor Clinton was getting kickbacks from the prison blood donor program. “
” The prison plasma program ended in 1994, but its effects linger. More than 1,000 Canadians who received plasma contaminated by that drawn from Arkansas prisoners were infected with HIV and 20,000 with hepatitis C.”
Good catch.
This is an example of what I have argued is a major threat from government-run healthcare. The issue is a matter of medical science, not a matter of political opinion. If government runs the healthcare system, then decisions that should be made on the basis of scientific evidence will be made based on political influence and the consequences are that people with politically unpopular needs or who have little voice in the political realm will not get care while people with a voice or with politically popular needs will get care. This weakens the quality of the healthcare system.
Why stop there? Why not collect blood from plague infected rats, too?
Put them and their families in line to be the first recipients of this blood and then lets see how they vote.
What could possibly go wrong?
(*slaps forehead*)
This is important because gays have repeated infections of other diseases, like hepatitis. As you say, the screening has gotten better; but, I would really rather be safe than sorry. This is the PC culture we have let thrive in this country where the safety of the majority of people is being comprimized because Gays won't admit that their lifestyle is unhealthy. So the rest of us must be forced to comply with that fantasy.
No doubt! I still hope somehow all 82 get some blood disease.
When the process kicks into gear, all the tests and stuff, I will bring that up.
Once again politicians want to make decisions that should be left to medical professionals. I’m a 2 gallon donor. I will stop donating if they change the rules. Every one of us is at risk here. They cannot be allowed to push this on us with some damn Executive Order. Another topic for townhalls this summer. After Benghazi, IRS, NSA, Shamnesty, etc. God help us.
I was just pleased that it was only ONE commie traitor “republican” who signed on.
I always liken it to continuing to play Russian Roulette, even after a few hundred chambers are added to the cylinder of the revolver.
Yes. Let’s ignore all the statistics and good public health practices. What is the endangerment of the lives of innocent men, women and children when the pride of gay men is at stake?
Now... That right there is reason enough for Liz Cheney to take the US Senate seat away from him PRONTO!!!
Oh! That’s right!! I forgot Liz approves of gaydom galore!!!
They’ve trying to get us all killed!!
They demonstrated their commitment by scheduling blood transfusions 3 months from now....
He has to “out-gay” her to win, to his thinking.
And dont tell me only a few people will get contaminated and infected. One is too many.
I always liken it to continuing to play Russian Roulette, even after a few hundred chambers are added to the cylinder of the revolver.
It’s very much like that. They say currently that your chances of getting HIV from transfused blood is one in 1.5 million. What’s it going to be if they allow HIV infected gays to donate? One in a hundred thousand?
NO NO NO.
