Why Do We Boycott 'Ender's Game' But Give Roman Polanski An Oscar?
policy mic ^ | 7/1/2013 | Angie Hartley

Orson Scott Card, whose science-fiction book Ender's Game is being released as a film, is a conservative Mormon with a long history of attacking gay people and their rights. He's also one of the most respected sci-fi writers of all time. This has really got sci-fi fans and gay rights activists in a moral dilemma as the momentum for the film builds up to its November 1 release.

Orson Scott Card has gone far beyond opposing gay marriage. In 1990, he wrote in Mormon publication Sunstone Magazine, “Laws against homosexual behavior should remain on the books, not to be indiscriminately enforced against anyone who happens to be caught violating them, but to be used when necessary to send a clear message that those who flagrantly violate society's regulation of sexual behavior cannot be permitted to remain as acceptable, equal citizens within that society.”

I think that works with at least one of the replies on this thread.

One can really never tell WHAT might happen when you provoke too much...

Questions put to Joseph Smith: "'Do you believe the Bible?' [Smith:]'If we do, we are the only people under heaven that does, for there are none of the religious sects of the day that do'. When asked 'Will everybody be damned, but Mormons'? [Smith replied] 'Yes, and a great portion of them, unless they repent, and work righteousness." (Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, p. 119).
Joseph Smith: "for the teachers of religion of the different sects understood the same passages of scripture so differently as to destroy all confidence in settling the question by an appeal to the Bible" (from Pearl of Great Price 1:12). "What is it that inspires professors of Christianity generally with a hope of salvation? It is that smooth, sophisticated influence of the devil, by which he deceives the whole world" (Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, p.270).

Brigham Young stated this repeatedly: "When the light came to me I saw that all the so-called Christian world was grovelling in darkness" (Journal of Discourses 5:73); "The Christian world, so-called, are heathens as to the knowledge of the salvation of God" (Journal of Discourses 8:171); "With a regard to true theology, a more ignorant people never lived than the present so-called Christian world" (Journal of Discourses 8:199); "And who is there that acknowledges [God's] hand? ...You may wander east, west, north, and south, and you cannot find it in any church or government on the earth, except the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints" (Journal of Discourses , vol. 6, p.24); "Should you ask why we differ from other Christians, as they are called, it is simply because they are not Christians as the New Testament defines Christianity" (Journal of Discourses 10:230).

Orson Pratt proclaimed: "Both Catholics and Protestants are nothing less than the 'whore of Babylon' whom the Lord denounces by the mouth of John the Revelator as having corrupted all the earth by their fornications and wickedness. Any person who shall be so corrupt as to receive a holy ordinance of the Gospel from the ministers of any of these apostate churches will be sent down to hell with them, unless they repent" (The Seer, p. 255).

Orson Pratt also said: "This great apostasy commenced about the close of the first century of the Christian era, and it has been waxing worse and worse from then until now" (Journal of Discourses
, vol.18, p.44) and: "But as there has been no Christian Church on the earth for a great many centuries past, until the present century, the people have lost sight of the pattern that God has given according to which the Christian Church should be established, and they have denominated a great variety of people Christian Churches, because they profess to be ...But there has been a long apostasy, during which the nations have been cursed with apostate churches in great abundance" (Journal of Discourses , 18:172).

President John Taylor stated: "Christianity...is a perfect pack of nonsense...the devil could not invent a better engine to spread his work than the Christianity of the nineteenth century." (Journal of Discourses , vol. 6, p.167); "Where shall we look for the true order or authority of God? It cannot be found in any nation of Christendom." (Journal of Discourses , 10:127).

James Talmage said: "A self-suggesting interpretation of history indicates that there has been a great departure from the way of salvation as laid down by the Savior, a universal apostasy from the Church of Christ". (A Study of the Articles of Faith, p.182).

President Joseph Fielding Smith said: "Doctrines were corrupted, authority lost, and a false order of religion took the place of the gospel of Jesus Christ, just as it had been the case in former dispensations, and the people were left in spiritual darkness." (Doctrines of Salvation, p.266). "For hundreds of years the world was wrapped in a veil of spiritual darkness, until there was not one fundamental truth belonging to the place of salvation ...Joseph Smith declared that in the year 1820 the Lord revealed to him that all the 'Christian' churches were in error, teaching for commandments the doctrines of men" (Doctrines of Salvation, vol. 3, p.282).

More recent statements by apostle Bruce McConkie are also very clear: "Apostasy was universal...And this darkness still prevails except among those who have come to a knowledge of the restored gospel" (Doctrines of Salvation, vol 3, p.265); "Thus the signs of the times include the prevailing apostate darkness in the sects of Christendom and in the religious world in general" (The Millennial Messiah, p.403); "a perverted Christianity holds sway among the so-called Christians of apostate Christendom" (Mormon Doctrine, p.132); "virtually all the millions of apostate Christendom have abased themselves before the mythical throne of a mythical Christ whom they vainly suppose to be a spirit essence who is incorporeal uncreated, immaterial and three-in-one with the Father and Holy Spirit" (Mormon Doctrine, p.269); "Gnosticism is one of the great pagan philosophies which antedated Christ and the Christian Era and which was later commingled with pure Christianity to form the apostate religion that has prevailed in the world since the early days of that era." (Mormon Doctrine, p.316).

President George Q. Cannon said: "After the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was organized, there were only two churches upon the earth. They were known respectively as the Church of the Lamb of God and Babylon. The various organizations which are called churches throughout Christendom, though differing in their creeds and organizations, have one common origin. They all belong to Babylon" (Gospel Truth, p.324).

President Wilford Woodruff stated: "the Gospel of modern Christendom shuts up the Lord, and stops all communication with Him. I want nothing to do with such a Gospel, I would rather prefer the Gospel of the dark ages, so called" (Journal of Discourses , vol. 2, p.196).

Orson Scott Card’s interview in 1990 was:
* Completely in line with majority views 23 years ago.
* In alignment with his faith, and about the only reasonable thing to say to a Mormon publication
* Stated before a fair number of the gay Nazis screaming at him were born or old enough to read any of his books.

OK, think of it this way: which do you think would make a person closer to God - being Mormon or living a deviant homosexual lifestyle? We have a cultural battle going on where one dimension is the acceptance of deviant sexual behavior as normal. Those that fall for this brainwashing and accept deviant sexual behavior as normal have little chance of ever knowing God, and each deviant thing they accept takes them farther away. Then you have Mormons, who, while believing in a definition of God that differs from scripture, at least respect morality and FIGHT AGAINST this acceptance of deviant sexual behavior. If they are successful at convincing people that deviant sexual behavior is immoral, they allow those people to have a better chance at finding God.

Now, do you really believe that dismissing or even fighting a guy who is supporting a path that will bring people closer to God just because he is a Mormon is actually serving God? Because, if you do, then you have a serious inability to think logically. If you saw Card trying to pull someone from a burning car, would you refuse to help him because he is Mormon? What you are suggesting is no different.

What’s to be intrigued about? I’ve known many Mormons, and they are mostly upstanding, moral, family-oriented, naturally conservative people. How is that not better than being a flag-burning, baby-killing, sodomizing commie retard?

“OK, think of it this way: which do you think would make a person closer to God - being Mormon or living a deviant homosexual lifestyle? “

Neither, homosexuality and idolatry are both damning sins. In fact, the sin of Mormonism is perhaps even greater, since it masquerades as the Gospel, though it is called accursed by the Apostle (Gal 1:6-9). So it provides false hope and salvation under the cover of their version of Christ, and damns a person to hell, as if there had been no change at all in their life.

Though, the LDS actually isn’t as hard on homosexual acts as people would like to believe.

“We have a cultural battle going on where one dimension is the acceptance of deviant sexual behavior as normal.”

We have a spiritual battle wherein groups like the Mormons and other deviants are trying to infiltrate Christianity and, thus, abolish the true Gospel of Jesus Christ. Mormonism is just one part of it. The Rob Bell types, Prosperity pimps, and other freaks and creeps are working for Satan too.

“If they are successful at convincing people that deviant sexual behavior is immoral, they allow those people to have a better chance at finding God.”

Biblically, it is God who goes forth and finds people, and it is not based on whether or not they think homosexuality is a sin or not. Otherwise, Scientologists, who have the same views, would be just as beneficial for your cause as any other, especially since on the lower levels they also claim that their religion is compatible with other religions.

Whether it is Mormons, or Scientologists, or Jehovah’s Witnesses, they are all interchangeable for your point of view, and would all, by your logic, be great defenders of “morality,” though they all possess deviant beliefs which renders them all “falling short of the glory of God.”

“Now, do you really believe that dismissing or even fighting a guy who is supporting a path that will bring people closer to God just because he is a Mormon is actually serving God? “

Of course, as what saith the scripture?

2Jn 1:10-11 If there come any unto you, and bring not this doctrine, receive him not into your house, neither bid him God speed: (11) For he that biddeth him God speed is partaker of his evil deeds.

And again,

2 Corinthians 11:12
And I will keep on doing what I am doing in order to cut the ground from under those who want an opportunity to be considered equal with us in the things they boast about.

Giving these people an appearance of being, somehow, equal with Christianity in no way supports our cause, but rather gives them ammunition to claim that they are Christian just like us, even as they drag souls to hell with their abominable teachings.

First, I never said anything about Mormons being equal to Christians. In fact, my whole point was that they DON'T HAVE TO BE EQUAL to Christians to be our natural allies IN THIS FIGHT. I would remind you, that when Prop 8 in California was up on the ballot (the referendum to define marriage as between one man and one woman), it was largely the money and effort of the Mormon church that got the votes for prop 8 to pass (which was then illegally invalidated by the leftwing courts, but that is irrelevant for this discussion). The Catholic Church do nearly as much, the Protestants didn't do nearly as much - that victory for God was won largely by the Mormons. Yet, you would advocate spurning their efforts because they have a different definition of God than Christians.

Well, if you want to get specific, Catholics and protestants have slightly different definitions of God as well. I'm going to guess that you're a member of an Evangelical sect (or a troll), in which case you probably hate Catholics and accuse them of worshiping Mary etc. etc. Are you going to refuse to support any Catholic efforts to protect and defend God's principles because you think they engage in idolatry as well? If so, then your list of allies gets pretty thin, and if we all thought like you, we would guarantee ourselves to lose this battle, and the war. If you're wondering why I keep bringing up the possibility of your being a troll, it is because I think you know this and want to sow discord among natural allies.

Just in case you aren't a troll, I'm going to attempt to make you understand this point one more time (I notice you've been avoiding addressing it): we should support Card (and anyone else) when he is on the right side of the Lord. We could disagree with everything else he believes, but if he says publicly that homosexuality is wrong and should be condemned as deviant, WE SHOULD SUPPORT HIM IN THIS EFFORT. If he later says that we should all join the Mormon Church, then we should disagree with him. Heck, if an atheist calls out homosexuality as deviant sexual behavior, we should support him in that effort. What you are advocating is worse than silly.

Tennessee Nana, who knows more on this subject than I do, wrote this previously on the topic of the LDS and Prop 8:

“the Mormons had to have something to occupy their time since their fair haired boy Willard had been beaten by the big bad apostate Senator McCain..

so they looked around for something that would pass as “busy work”

and lo and behold, the Baptists had been working for years in California to pass a law against gay marriage...

the legislation wasnt quite ready and 2008 was not the year to try it but what the hey who cared it would do as a cover...

(and make the Willard the “moderate progressive” (his own words) seem “conservative” and the Mormons along with him)

so the Mormons muscled into the Baptists project andf took over insisting on throwing the raw material out into the winds of chance...

They werent intending to really help the “gentile” Christians, or pass any legislation, they just wanted to hide and have a cover...

anything but be exposed as refusing to help McCain get elected And beat a “black man”

Yes kid, the Mormons threw MILLIONS and many man hours at California knowing that Prop 8 couldn’t pass as is or if it did squeak by it was doomed to be overturned i nb the courts...

The Mormons wrestled the projust from the quite capable Christians and destroyed the careful work of years...

The whole aim was to avoid helping McCain get elected and beat their Mormon guy to the White House...

Shades of George Romney who in 1964 taught the Mormons how to stomp on the Republican and aid the Democrat...

and that dear kiddies is the rest of the story...”

(Copied and pasted from one of Nana’s posts on the matter, though don’t have the link just now)

I’ll also add that Mitt Romney’s support of gays in the boyscout, and his getting permission by the LDS to take a pro-abortion stance in Mass., pretty much nullifies even having the LDS around as useful servants of our cause. They are not even reliable political friends, as the motivations and actions of the LDS leadership revolves around benefiting themselves and the promotion of their cult.

“First, I never said anything about Mormons being equal to Christians. In fact, my whole point was that they DON’T HAVE TO BE EQUAL to Christians to be our natural allies IN THIS FIGHT. “

I never said that you said anything about Mormons being equal to Christians. I said that using the Mormons to fight social battles gives the appearance that they are equal and accepted by Christianity. You might as well, at this point, cast out devils by Beelzebub or Belial.

I’ll extend your analogy even more. Glenn Beck brings many to conservative causes and fights for Godly liberty and freedom. Against great odds, he fights the good fight. Now, even though he is a Mormon, there are decent and rational people who are not of his faith who don’t care his personal convictions, but side with him on natural moral grounds that they both share. It’s obvious there are some here who would spurn everything Glenn Beck stands for because of his faith. I am glad you are not among them throwing stones. Thank you.

Golly, I didn't know that Tennessee Nana was the ultimate authority on these topics. Who else are you going to reference? Your mom? Your Uncle Bob? A bunch of speculation by another Freeper means squat in terms of appealing to authority.

Tennessee Nana, no offense to you. I'm not arguing with your words because I don't know the context - I'm arguing with this guy's tactic of copying and pasting your stuff from previous threads as some kind of debate tactic. I still think he's engaging in divide and conquer trolling. Now I think he's dragging you into this to try to get you and me to argue.

I wasn’t trying to get Nana to come and fight with you. I just remembered Nana’s perspective on that topic, and thought it better than mine (I don’t know anything about what goes on in California).

As to your arguments in general, you’ve not explained why you would want Mormons doing the job that Christians are supposed to be doing in the first place. Of course I want the LDS conquered, and you divided from them. That was the premise of my original post! And to respond to something I forgot to respond to in your first post... you cannot compare Mormonism with Catholicism or with any denomination of Christianity. Mormonism is, by the accepted definition of all Christians, outside of Christianity. It would have been better to compare them to Scientology.

Those that fall for this brainwashing and accept deviant sexual behavior as normal have little chance of ever knowing God, and each deviant thing they accept takes them farther away.

And yet, the BOTTOM line reads...

Genesis 13:13
Now the men of Sodom were wicked and were sinning greatly against the LORD.

Genesis 18:20-21
20. Then the LORD said, "The outcry against Sodom and Gomorrah is so great and
their sin so grievous
21. that I will go down and see if what they have done is as bad as the outcry that has reached me. If not, I will know."

Genesis 19:4-7
4. Before they had gone to bed, all the men
from every part of the city of Sodom--both young and old--surrounded the house.
5. They called to Lot, "Where are the men who came to you tonight? Bring them out to us so that we can have sex with them
."
6. Lot went outside to meet them and shut the door behind him
7. and said, "No, my friends. Don't do this wicked thing.

Psalms 12:8 The wicked freely strut about when what is vile is honored among men.

Doonesbury Cartoon for Feb/08/2013

Isaiah 3:9 The look on their faces testifies against them; they parade their sin like Sodom; they do not hide it. Woe to them! They have brought disaster upon themselves.

2 Peter 2:13b Their idea of pleasure is to carouse in broad daylight. They are blots and blemishes, reveling in their pleasures while they feast with you.

Ezekiel 16:49-50
49. "`Now this was the sin of your sister Sodom: She and her daughters were arrogant, overfed and unconcerned; they did not help the poor and needy.
50. They were haughty and did detestable things before me. Therefore I did away with them as you have seen.

2 Peter 2

1. But there were also false prophets among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you. They will secretly introduce destructive heresies, even denying the sovereign Lord who bought them--bringing swift destruction on themselves.
2. Many will follow their shameful ways and will bring the way of truth into disrepute.
3. In their greed these teachers will exploit you with stories they have made up. Their condemnation has long been hanging over them, and their destruction has not been sleeping.
4. For if God did not spare angels when they sinned, but sent them to hell, putting them into gloomy dungeons to be held for judgment;
5. if he did not spare the ancient world when he brought the flood on its ungodly people, but protected Noah, a preacher of righteousness, and seven others;
6. if he condemned the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah by burning them to ashes, and made them an example of what is going to happen to the ungodly;
7. and if he rescued Lot, a righteous man, who was distressed by the filthy lives of lawless men
8. (for that righteous man, living among them day after day, was tormented in his righteous soul by the lawless deeds he saw and heard)--
9. if this is so, then the Lord knows how to rescue godly men from trials and to hold the unrighteous for the day of judgment, while continuing their punishment.
10. This is especially true of those who follow the corrupt desire of the sinful nature and despise authority. Bold and arrogant, these men are not afraid to slander celestial beings;
11. yet even angels, although they are stronger and more powerful, do not bring slanderous accusations against such beings in the presence of the Lord.
12. But these men blaspheme in matters they do not understand. They are like brute beasts, creatures of instinct, born only to be caught and destroyed, and like beasts they too will perish.
13. They will be paid back with harm for the harm they have done.
Their idea of pleasure is to carouse in broad daylight. They are blots and blemishes, reveling in their pleasures while they feast with you.

But there IS hope!!!

1 Corinthians 6:9-11

9. Do you not know that the wicked will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived:
Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor male prostitutes nor homosexual offenders
10. nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God.
11. And that is what some of you were. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.

If you could NOT change, you would be in most pitiful shape...
