Sybrina Fulton repeated her assertion that neighborhood watch volunteer George Zimmerman "got away with murder" in the 2012 killing of her son largely because of Florida's self-defense law, which generally removed a person's duty to retreat if possible in the face of danger. It was the first of its kind in the nation when passed in 2005. Now, about two dozen states have similar laws, but the focus of repeal efforts is squarely on Florida.
"We have to change the law so that this doesn't happen to someone else's child," Fulton told reporters

Although he was not part of the event, the Rev. Jesse Jackson appeared as a spectator and later told reporters that the "stand your ground" law reminded him of past laws that prevented blacks from sitting at the front of buses.

The Justice Department is investigating whether Zimmerman, who identifies as Hispanic, may have committed a hate crime in killing Martin.

Petition by
Tracy Martin and Sybrina Fulton with Change for Trayvon
Last year, our son Trayvon Martin was stalked, chased down and killed by George Zimmerman, and Zimmerman faced no punishment whatsoever. That's in large part because Florida is one of at least 21 states with some form of 'Stand Your Ground' law, which enables people like George Zimmerman to claim self-defense.
We're calling on 21 governors whose states have some form of 'Stand Your Ground' laws to review those laws and amend them so that people who instigate conflicts -- people like George Zimmerman -- won't be able to use these laws to get away with murder.
'Stand Your Ground' was never meant to give aggressors the opportunity to get away with murder, but that is what happened when our son, Trayvon Benjamin Martin was killed. After Trayvon's death, law enforcement used the law as an excuse to refuse to arrest George Zimmerman. Even worse, the jury in the case was instructed to think of what Zimmerman did as self-defense, even though Zimmerman ignored instructions from the police and instigated conflict with our son, who was just trying to get home to his father.
We are shocked and heartbroken by the jurys decision to allow our sons killer to go free. Despite our despair, we must honor Trayvons legacy by doing all that we can to protect other young people from being targeted, pursued, and senselessly murdered.
We are not the only ones calling for 'Stand Your Ground' laws to be reviewed. President Obama spoke out on the need for review, and prominent Republicans like Senator John McCain have joined him. This is not a Democrat or Republican issue, its not black or white issue, its a wrong and right issue. This is a matter of making sure that no other family will ever have to go through what we have been through. No parents should ever have to know what it feels like to watch your child's killer walk free.
Here in Florida, we are pushing for an amendment to Florida's 'Stand Your Ground' law. Sign our petition to call on all at least 21 governors to review their laws and consider similar amendments so that they can protect children in their states, just as we wish Florida would have protected Trayvon.
We want to say thank you to all of you who have stood up for our son. Because of all of your efforts, Trayvons life is celebrated all over the world. Please continue to stand with us as we fight to ensure that his legacy is to leave behind a safer and more peaceful world for all our sons and daughters.
Stop attacking my rights, you hateful b*tch.
The FL stand your ground laws had NOTHING to do with this case. Zimmerman’s defense lawyers never invoked the law as part of their defense. Zimmerman shot Martin in self defense. The agenda being pursued here has nothing to do with the facts of this case.
They’re agitating for a more general reaction out of “whitey” to give them an excuse to use the militarized federal law enforcement against them.
The MSM will NEVER find the ‘off’ button for these sh&%s!
A perfect example of a low info voter. I think in this case though their “tragedy” is being used in an attempt to further gun control. These people can’t even see past their race long enough to see how they are being used.
We live in a politically correct world now.
I would be afraid of getting in any altercation with a black person. Why? Because the way the social/legal climate is now, the presumption is that the black person is innocent of any wrongdoing, while it is up to you to prove that you were not somehow at fault.
How many people want to do neighborhood watch now? How many neighborhood watch people are now bending over backwards to avoid reporting suspicious activity by blacks, for fear of being the next George Zimmerman?
Also, repeal the law that makes .08 the Blood Alcohol Content necessary for a DUI, since that law was just as responsible for Zimmerman's acquittal as Stand Your Ground was.
It's as relevant to her son's death as is the SYG law.
You can always tell what is standing in the way of their next step by what they most strongly oppose, or advocate.
SYG stands in the way of what?
Thugs preying on civilized people. They must want that with a passion.
Now the kid was living with who??
All true.
Apparently you read cursive.
Trayvon’s mother had not raised him full time since he was two years old. He was being raised in various ad hoc arrangements his whole life. Which was one reason he was a gang banger in training.
She got about a million dollar settlement from the homeowner’s association due to her son’s death. And she has that even though Zimmerman was acquitted of a crime.
I don’t know what to make of her. She’s not just a grieving mother, even though the MSM is portraying her as such.
This absentee-mother wants to change the ‘SYG’ law and add ‘retreat’ to the mix? How could Mr. George Zimmerman have ‘retreated’ while his head was being bashed into concrete?
Trayvon Martin’s mother: Repeal stand-ground law
Cuban leaf: Are you still here? Your 15 minutes are up. Feel free to talk with your friends about stuff you actually know about and let the adults handle this.
He (Holder) also said for “White people to run away”
“We have to change the law so that this doesn’t happen to someone else’s child,” Fulton told reporters
I hate factual errors. Zimmerman did not “INSTIGATE” things. The jury concluded that Trayvon threw the first punch. Yet we are being fed this narrative that Zimmerman started the fight, regardless of whether that conflicts with evidence presented in court.
