Fresh off his talking tour of Iowa and the Midwest, Sen. Ted Cruz soaked up the spotlight in Denver this weekend and took the No. 1 spot in one of the straw polls of the 2014 election season.
The junior senator from Texas earned multiple standing ovations at the Western Conservative Summit on Saturday when he called for the end of the embattled Internal Revenue Service and urged lawmakers to defund Obamacare.
He revealed a Senate Republican campaign against the Obama administrations health care overhaul, called Dont Fund It, which he launched with Sen. Mike Lee, R-Utah. Cruz has fiercely opposed Obamacare since he entered office seven months ago, and is one of the leading lawmakers trying to block its implementation next year.
The Tea Party duo launched a website that targets Republican senators who have not pledged to oppose 2014 funding Sens. John McCain of Arizona, Richard Burr of South Carolina, and Tom Coburn of Oklahoma.
A poll taken during the three-day summit showed the Texas senator far ahead of other potential 2016 candidates. Forty-five percent of attendees chose Cruz, compared to the events keynote speaker, Gov. Scott Walker, who came in second place with 13 percent.
During the 2011 summits poll before the 2012 election, restaurant executive Herman Cain took the lead.
Former presidential candidate Mike Huckabee also spoke this weekend in Denver, along with former Rep. Allen West, who closed out the conference.
Cruz has repeatedly denied a presidential bid, even after traveling to Iowa, one of the first states to hold a primary in 2014 with another possible contender, Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky.
At this point, 100 percent of my focus is on the U.S. Senate. And the reason is simple: The Senates the battlefield. The Senate is where these fights are being fought, Cruz told reporters after the event. So Im devoting my time, No. 1, to trying to stand up for free-market principles and the Constitution.
Cruz, Paul and Lee will also speak at a sold-out event Wednesday hosted by the Young Americans for Liberty organization.
As much as I like Cruz, I haven’t been convinced that he’s eligible. His father was not a citizen at the time of his birth and he was born in Canada.
Ted Cruz - Greatest Vote I have cast since Nov. 84’
Betcha that’s torquing off Rove. Makes my day!
Cruz/West - 2016
Cruz is excellent. Glad to see him topping one of these polls, since many of the other candidates have either fully disqualified themselves, or muddied their reputation.
Funny to see this spat between Krispy Kreme and Rand Paul. A foreshadowing of things to come?
That’s not the law, fortuntely in this case.
Title 8 section 1401 subsection G qualifies Mr Cruz through his US citizen mother and grants him citizenship at birth. Since he has never needed naturalization, he is a natural born citizen.
If hundreds of lower court decisions and the Supreme Court validating those decisions regarding Obama have not settled this issue, then I suggest you just abstain from the political process of voting.
Its too complicated for you.
I am on Cruz control.
This is great news.
Cruz, our first Hispanic vs our First woman in 2016? Or will it be the Press’s choice of our 1st loudmouth vs. the First woman?
They'll say he's a white Canadian vs the wise woman who shares the same cherokee blood as Elizabeth Warren.
Chuck Schumer and the Democrats did Ted Cruz an enormous favor by eliminating Marco Rubio as a presidential contender, and now Chris Christie and Rand Paul are destroying each other.
The only thing Ted Cruz has to worry about is the type of manufactured scandal that did in Herman Cain.
However, if Anthony Weiner and Elliot Spitzer become NYC mayor and comptroller, they will so dominate the airwaves as poster boys for outrageously degenerate Democratic behavior, the Democrats won’t be able to point fingers at anyone.
If anti-Cruz slanders and attacks come from any source, it will likely be from the Karl Rove/RNC political machine. If Ted Cruz can handle them, it will be a great day for Conservatives, the Republican party, and the country.
Wish I could have voted for him twice!! Well, I did in the Primary and the General, but I meant in the General like the dems routinely do.
It is not often a true fearless and honorable patriot star comes along. Not yet going to compare to Forefathers, but he may prove out.
Correct. The mistaken many think it requires both parents to be US Citizens, it does not.
Hate to burst your bubbles, but Rand will stand up fine against Christie, Herman’s scandals were his own making and Cruz has already been through the crucible from the worst Texas politician, Dewhurst and came out a brighter star than before.
Ditto. It's starting to look as if Cruz will be the last conservative republican standing.
