Group dedicates Trayvon Martin memorial in Sanford

VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. (WFTV) -- A group of Trayvon Martin supporters walked from Jacksonville to Sanford, where they dedicated a memorial for the teen at a museum late Saturday afternoon.

The demonstrators arrived in Sanford late Friday, ending what they called the "Walk for Dignity," which started in Jacksonville.

The group held a community forum Saturday afternoon, followed by a dedication of the Trayvon Martin memorial at the Goldsboro Westside Historical Museum.

"The most important reason why we're here, we want a system that treats us equally," marcher Estefania Galvis said.

The group's six-day walk from Jacksonville to Sanford was organized to bring awareness of what it believes are injustices due to laws relating to stand your ground. It's an issue that hasn't quit since Zimmerman was found not guilty of murder in Martin's death.

Additionally, the group is calling for the resignation of State Attorney Angela Corey, who was the special prosecutor in the George Zimmerman case.

"She is the representative of the system that has failed us. That's the first step, we want a new system," Galvis said.

The marchers also went door-to-door in the Sanford community earlier on Saturday to egage and connect with local residents.

blacks seem to want a system that holds whites to one standard and blacks to a different standard: Whites have to be honest, hardworking respectful, and never criticize a black person. Blacks can choose to be honest, hardworking, respectful if they so desire, but if they do not so desire, whites cannot view that negatively and must still treat them as if they are honest, hardworking, and respectful.

This memorial is WAY to impersonal. It needs an "historical" view of Traybon's thug life. They need to add a "smoke" machine. Every once in a while, it lets out a puff. Also, a little fountain trickling watermelon iced tea. And a little ramp with Skittles Rolling down it. At the bottom, they get lifted back up to roll down again. A huge hoodie top should be erected over the whole thing in case of rain. A pot dispenser, commemorating his days as a dealer. You put your EBT card in the slot and some scraps of weed come out. Then finish it off with a backpack full of jewelry, a big marker, and some more scraps of weed. A little video screen, like a phone, with him flipping the finger and showing his golden grille. Oh, and a continual loop of him screaming for help as he beat up Zim.

Take responsibility for yourself and get off the welfare rolls.

Educate yourself and get a job.

Most importantly, have young black males stop acting like thugs and siring babies out of wedlock to show what "men" they are also quit killing each other.

In short, reject the ghetto culture and respect those who strive to succeed without calling them Uncle Toms or acting white.

Nobody, and I mean nobody in this group walked the 100+ miles from J'ville to Sanford unless they started right after the verdict.

They all look like they use the electric shopping carts at Walmart.

I didn’t know until now that Goldsboro had a museum. A bad neighborhood is not the best place to build one, after all.

I had too look it up also. We had this discussion here years ago about black museums going under for various reasons. One was dilution where several small black museums would have done better to combine at one big museum than to fight over limited dollars like they do now.

Even if I was in the area what would make me want to go and see this museum? Is the exciting addition of a memorial to a guy who was 0-1 in the the knockout game supposed to make me get up a carload to visit it? I’ll pass.
