Biotechnology giant Monsanto is scrapping plans to win approval to grow new types of genetically modified crops in the European Union.
It says the move is due to the lack of prospects for cultivation in the EU
... It comes just days after the EU began talks with the US on a wide-ranging trade deal, with agriculture likely to be one of the toughest issues.
The company said it would now concentrate on growing its conventional seeds business in Europe.
It will also look to get EU approval to import its genetically modified crop varieties from the US and South America into Europe

One of the few areas where Europe seems to have found the idea of Liberty to be practical, and which is one of the few areas about Europe the US should emulate.
Cool they will soon be importing food from us.
If they aren’t interested in growing the GM crops, why would they be interested in paying to import them?
Good for the EU...for once. I despise Monsanto GMO monopolists enforcers
Though I think EU are screwing Monsanto only because it is a US corporation. Same as they recently did Microsoft. Extorted a one billion dollar fine to pay for bloated Brussels salaries
Right on, looks like we will be importing food from the EU now.
Well said.
The EU is smarter than we in this instance,GMO is bad juju and they also ban Bayer and Syngenta. I applaud capitalism but Monsanto is a monopoly, is evil and should be shut down just on general principle, if not for their outright lies, payoffs, bribes and bullsh@t “science”.
Isn’t Bayer a German company?
Your buddies from the cancer thread love Monsanto. How did that conversation go? I saw they made posts to me, but I refuse to look at them. Those two, in addition to a few others, are quite nasty individuals.
How so
Bad juju is right!! GMO crops and Monsanto monopolizing them are very bad on many levels, material and spiritual!!! :)
I am not a farmer but I try to think like one. I grow edibles on my modest property. So I try to walk the walk in my own small way
Strange isn’t it. With all the articles about problems with Monsanto’s GMO stuff spreading, it is like they are blind or something.
Hey, if Monsanto goes back to regular seed practices it is a big win, good on um.
But seed engineered for mass production cannot compete with heritage seed that was engineered for taste. That is, if taste is your target. I grow Russian Red Kale, a great 1800’s variety. It tastes better, is bug resistant and grows in the snow. Commercial Kale Grows faster, is tougher for harvesting and does not taste near as good. It also dies when it snows, and you have to buy seed every year. I live in Alaska now, so Russian Red is the winner hands down.
Monsanto is Mass Production, not Quality. It has its place in the market too. It is cheap.
Todd thought I was some greenie cause I did not like Monsanto GMO pollution showing up in heritage seed lines. Accused me of being a anti-capitalist. Try as hard as I could, he just could not/would not let go of that idea.
That is why I did not try to talk to him, it was proven worthless.
And Thanks, that was a rough posting. I really hate it when they start describing you to you when they have never met you. All the world is their own perceptions, reality need not apply.
Scary.
Clearly the wildlife can read.
I don’t want my corn falling of the cob...
IOW, the EU told them to hit the road.
