A teenage girl from France was killed in a shark attack while swimming off the Indian Ocean island of Reunion, the fifth person to be killed by sharks on the island since 2011.
Local officials said the 15-year-old was attacked in the mid-afternoon while swimming just five metres from shore in the shallows of Saint-Paul bay on the western side of the island.
The teenager's body was sliced in two at the torso, and then "a part of her body was taken away by the shark", said Gina Hoarau, the head of public safety on the island.
The girl, who was named only as "Sarah" by French media, was swimming with another girl her age when the attack - just metres from a popular restaurant - happened.

Horrible.
Terrible story. I’ve been afraid of the ocean since I saw Jaws as a child.

Stunning beach, horrific tragedy.
Did the shark have a “Justice for Travon” T-shirt on?
That will be a real comfort to the girl’s parents./s
Probably a jewish special forces trained shark.
Almost got eaten alive by a great white back in the early 70’s
Still see that mouth and size.
Prayers up for the family and friends.
This does not sound like a good vacation spot.
5 meters=less than 6 yards...
horrible...
I’ve watched on Discovery Channel or wherever, they give scientists grants to prove the shark feeds and then goes far away, in an effort to stop people from hunting sharks after killings like this. That is how out of phase we are on the human/ animal relationship.
Tell your shark story!
If I were you, I would never go in the ocean again.

Yes, but Californica today made it illegal to sell or serve shark fins. Poor misunderstood sharks.
Roughly 16 feet from shore???
...the fifth person to be killed by sharks on the island since 2011.

Just wondering if this fact is generally known among the people who vacation there....
Me, too! It ruined my fun at the beach forever.
Entering the ocean on a volunteer basis is akin to being an athiest and accompanying Daniel into the Lion's Den.
Or bedding down for the night in a hungry bear's den.
Or walking into a rattlesnakes' nest barefooted.
Or playing badminton with a hornet's nest.
Or trying to extinguish a Killer Bee hive with a BB gun.
Yeah, pretty much ruined it!
She was split at Reunion.
Is there any Limericksters on the plane?
A couple months ago we attended a banquet at a Chinese restaurant. Everyone in the restaurant including non-banquet customers were eating shark-fin soup like it was the last time they would have it. The servers told us eat it while you can before the law takes hold, and that they've sold more this year than ever before. Unintended consequences of the law, as more sharks than ever were killed for this soup. Delicious, by the way.
