NFL Stars Feel Heat After Zimmerman Tweets
ABC News ^ | 7/14/13 | Andrew Springer

Posted on 07/14/2013 2:35:33 PM PDT by Impala64ssa

New York Giants star receiver Victor Cruz tweeted an ominous prediction for George Zimmerman shortly after Zimmerman was acquitted of murder, and then quickly deleted the tweet. And later apologized for it.

The NFL star tweeted to his more than 334,000 follwers, “Zimmerman doesn’t last a year til the hood catches up to him.” The tweet has since been deleted.

In a series of follow up tweets, the Giant said that his angry tweet was “my initial interpretation of the reaction I was reading on twitter.I immediately realized my tweet was a mistake and I apologize.”

Cruz was not the only football player to spark protest with a tweet about the Zimmerman trial verdict. Atlanta Falcons wide receiver Roddy White was also barraged after this tweet: All them jurors should go home tonight and kill themselves for letting a grown man get away with killing a kid

Rather than deleting the tweet after a round of protests from the twittersphere, White defended his words in another tweet an hour later:
It's crazy how people on twitter want me to get in trouble for a tweet that they are retweeting because they want something to happen thanks

This morning, though, White tweeted an apology: I understand my tweet last nite was extreme. I never meant for the people to do that. I was shocked and upset about the verdict. I am sorry.

Twitter saw a flood of passionate comments about the verdict. In the minutes following the announcement, tweets about the case shot to more than 47,800 TPM (tweets per minute) according to the ABC News Social Desk.

The total number of tweets about the verdict — more than 4.5 million — has surpassed the number of tweets about the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in December

Perhaps someone realized that food stamps can’t be used to buy game tickets.

Maybe they are able to buy a nose bleed seat by selling their Obamaphone...

The NFL is nothing but a bunch of thugs, racists, low lifes, criminals and druggies. No, thanks. I can live just fine without pro football.

Along with id, make sure he didnt just buy skittles. Because that can and will be used against you. Never shoot someone (even if you fear for your life) if they just picked up a bag of fresh skittles.

Their corporate endorsements have clauses. Their agents said don’t be fools.

it's time to stop watching

The NFL has got to have a code of conduct for players. If they want to save the sport, they'll have to stop recruiting thugs and murderers, and when they get there things like these two inciting riot has got to mean an end to careers. Otherwise, between the injury problems (think lawsuits) and the disgust of decent people, the NFL's going to go into decline.

I heard someone on TV say last night that Michael Vick was put in jail for killing dogs and Zimmerman walks free for killing a teenager. he then said that was evidence of racism in America. What a foolish comparison.

Yes that was Michael Vick's brother that "tweeted" that

The NFL can sell itself to blacks, hispanics, women and gays.

The NFL PAC gave 100% of its donations to Democrats.

and the NFL blocked Rush from owning a team because he would be too polarizing.

“I wonder how all those racist athletes felt when O.J. Simpson was found innocent.”

O.J. was not found innocent. He was found “Not Guilty,” which means, in the eyes of the jury, the prosecution did not prove their case beyond a reasonable doubt.

Although, with that particular L.A. jury, it would have been a near impossible task to do so.

This is such an insightful comment it bears repeating....

Translation: "My "Creepy Ass Cracker" agent called to tell me that I just endangered that fat Contract he negotiated and I needed to do some serious CYAs and Mea Culpas or the money train was gonna get derailed and I be out of a job."

Sure would be interesting to see a picture of Mr. Cruz's agent....FREEPER HINT

That gave me pause1 Had to check. I guess there are/were more than one Willie Horton.

Yes... This Willie Horton (325 lifetime home runs), not Michael Dukakis's resume enhancement (two consecutive life terms plus 85 years)...

Twitter saw a flood of passionate comments about the verdict.

Leave to ABC to spin the call for murder and genocide into an understandable "passionate" response. The occupation media is still the enabler of great evil.

As I remember it Willie Horton was jailed and paid his debt to society. He turned out to be a real man.

Which Willie Horton listed here are you referring too? Neither one fits your recollection...

“Pro football is nothing but a gang of steer thugs. It’s time to stop watching. Not that I watch—but why support this America-bashing sport?”

Then you do the libs jobs for them. Best thing to do about this? Quietly boycott the companies that endorse him. No fanfare, no threats. Once they start losing money, they will know what happened and drop him.

“If a manager tells you to sacrifice yourself to move runners up, you do it or you sit on the bench or go play triple A ball.”

Good point. Also there’s a reason you don’t have fruity celebratory dancing/self congratulatory chest pounding when a diving catch is made or a pick-off move works, or a base is stolen, or a run is pushed in by a walk.

Are you thinking of Gates Brown, iirc? There was a Tigers centerfielder who got out of prison and then made the majors—Brown? Might have played for the ChiSox, too. Or someone else? I’m a National League fan, so I’m a bit fuzzy on it.
