The finishing touches are being applied to the long-anticipated formal announcement that Caroline Kennedy will be the next U.S. ambassador to Japan.

Kennedy's predecessors include luminaries such as Senate majority leader Mike Mansfield, former vice president Walter Mondale, former House speaker Tom Foley and former Senate majority leader Howard Baker.

I’m not sure how brilliant JFK was. He could deliver a very good speech. Let’s be honest though, the media adored the two of them, and I’m pretty sure we were gamed on his brilliance. There was something wrong with the guy, having to ‘score’ all the time like he did. He was even reckless about it, having relations with an East German spy (I believe it was). And then there was Judith Exner.
As for Jackie, they tried to sell her as the most polished of women. She was from ‘money’, was so charming. She was also sold to be an intellectual. Then they decided it would be a great idea if she presented a White House tour on television.
Here was this classic upper-cruster, sounding as if she was a timid freshman in high-school. It was embarrassingly bad.
I think Jackie for the most part handled herself good. She didn’t capitalize off her husband’s misfortune. She was respectful to the country. I appreciated that. Contrast Hillary with her, always capitalizing off her husband every chance there was.
I would sure hope so.
The state department is very problematic IMO. I get people that disagree with me on that, but I see the State Department as an organization that thinks everything can be handled diplomatically.
Unfortunately, that means we allow things to fester to a place where we have to take military action, and at times in much worse circumstances than we would have had to had we simply faced reality to begin with.
I don’t think the Cold War would ever have ended if the State Department had controlled everything.
In the post WW II era..with all the advances in communications..diplomacy is run out of the WH..ambassadors are like hood ornaments..nice but useless..at lower levels..trade attaches, visas.. etc..State does important, necessary work
I can agree with that.
I will admit to thinking that the ‘permanent class’ of government workers, don’t always agree with the current administration and merely bide their time until a better guy comes along, not really pushing the agenda of the current guy if they disagree.
This is something I think plays into the State Department to a certain degree. The upper levels are involved because of the nature of their duties.
As you mentioned, the rank and file paper pushers (for lack of a better term) are probably as you say, doing a good job.
Ambassadorships have traditionally been political payoffs.
Grandpa Joe Kennedy being an obvious case in point.
Look out Japan, you will hear more “Ya Know’s” than you ever thought imaginable!!!
She’s CLASSLESS.....she totally insulted Laura Bush.
How much Japanese does she speak??? This looks like a farce...I guess she busted her butt bundling for JugEars last time around.
Japanese are such boot lickers of the those with prestige. They will bow and scrape to this Kennedy name ambassador
I guess I missed that one. I thought they were still married.
Hah!!!! :-)
“Aside from her maiden name what are her qualifications to be ambassador to Japan”
She can eat with chopsticks, has driven a Toyota, watched anime and owned Sony products?
Well....they may be....WIKI says she got married...and doesn’t talk about the divorce, but I swear they separated several years ago....
Yes the Kennedy’s don’t get divorced. They either get annulled or separated. Gotta get that communion wafer on Sunday. :=)
Caroline ummm, you know... ummm Kennedy... ummm you know.... like ummm you know, like what are her ummmm qualifications you know?
They also don't have to break up with mistresses and/or girlfriends...they just kill them and get away with it.
