Stanford researchers are on track to begin human trials of a potentially potent new weapon against cancer, and would-be participants are flooding in following the Post’s initial report on the discovery.
The progress comes just two months after the groundbreaking study by Dr Irv Weissman, who developed an antibody that breaks down a cancer's defense mechanisms in the body.
A protein called CD47 tells the body not to "eat" the cancer, but the antibody developed by Dr Weissman blocks CD47 and frees up immune cells called macrophages — which can then engulf the deadly cells.

this is similar to our fave rave race-baiting poverty pimps, if such things as real jobs and economic growth were left to conservatives to work on, it would eliminate the need for the race-baiters.
i tend to think along the same lines for big pharm, any med that successfully wipes out a dangerous disease, can pretty much eliminate the profit motive for making it...
if it works and cures, fantastic, but beware big pharm....
thats why i advocate natural medicine that cant be regulated by the fda, or taken over by big pharm...
I had HER2 breast cancer. The drugs and their side effects almost killed me. I was lucky that I got in on a UCLA trial drug that cost over $200,000 a yr. Because I was part of the trial I got it for nothing.
The rest was billed to my insurance. $13,000-14,000 every 3 weeks during chemo.
Then there was all the side drugs I was given to counter all the side effects I got from the chemo. It is a big dollar industry.
Was a long haul.
Don’t blame big pharm for not being able to make enough money on a drug when the FDA certification process costs hundreds of millions of dollars.
The evil FDA will stretch out testing to 2100. I agree with Milton Friedman about government licensing. There is no moral or rational reason the FDA should exist.
In the 80s the evil FDA kept a heart drug off the market for over 10 years (it was available in Europe). At least 100,000 Americans died needlessly.
If there is some "marketplace" safety process that the FDA is chartered to achieve, it could be done orders of magnitude better in the free enterprise system (that does not include crony-capitalist statist companies)
If we had a true free market system, these crony-capitalist companies would not be able to bottle up any beneficial product offering.
The evil of the big Pharma is allowed to exist because the government grants them that power...
Stoopid sexy sounding sh!t is what this is. The cure is out there and all of us have it in our pantry. You can’t deliver from the pantry, but the ingredient is there - Sodium Bicarbonate aka Baking Soda. The problem is there’s no money in baking soda, so therefore no serious research for a solution.
You do realize that the biggest reason for any delay is the FDA and other government agencies? If there was a true free market, products would quickly get to market.
Of course, the other big impediment to quick product availability is the viciously evil trial lawyers who work to destroy free enterprise. In their world, ALL mistakes, or unknown consequences are purposeful
Drug testing was almost miraculous, but it was sold to another company, then another, and that slowed it down. Who knows what’s happening now.
This sounds like the 100mph carburetor type story. Think about it. The profits would be huge if there was really a simple drug that would do such.
I would think the original creators of the drug would be furious and have some way to slightly alter and bring it to market.
Or, someone would leak the drug formula out and it would be produced on the black-market.
I would like to know who are the original developers. I can research and see what truly happened.

My wife has Multiple Myeloma, a rare blood cancer and incurable. She has lived a year longer than predicted and going strong due to novel drugs made available at no charge by one of those rapacious drug companies.
Now I view the claim by the article as marginally believable. Cancer is too complex and its impact too individualized to get spun up by sweeping claims. But drug companies vary as do people.
Wow hope your doing better. Yes, the money involved is insane and the crap this government gets away with right now, I don’t even have to guess that if a cure in a pill was discovered today it would be immediately squashed. Just look at the George Zimmerman trial, a local case - just THAT and the government shows its corruption, attempts to railroad it. And then with the IRS harassing conservative groups.. So I can just imagine the crap they would pull with the FDA for a multi-billion dollar industry. Forget about it. That’s why to me there will never be a cure for cancer until people wise up and stop voting these fascist commie psychopaths into office.
No raygunfan is not from DU, but the truth is spoken here. The very evil drug companies that happen to OWN the FDA will never - ever allow a cure to make it to the market. There are several real holistic cures, but none advocated by "serious" professionals. And by cure I don't mean treatment. Serious professionals that advocate holistic cures are intimidated into keeping their mouth shut.
The cancer industry is a total and complete sham. It is not designed to help people overcome their disease, it is designed to keep them coming back for more treatment. I question the legitimacy of drug companies as simple profitable ventures. That is not the case unless you are under the delusion that the FDA is a government run group. The game is fixed from the inside.

I once had a psych professor who told us that a scientist needs to view his own results skeptically. I think you may have a point. (Liberal “scientists” have forgotten that.)
Life span increases are due almost 100% to the contributions of “big pharma”.
Alternative medicines, aren’t alternatives, they are what didn’t work before actual medicines came along.
