If the goal of the federal school lunch overhaul is to improve outcomes for children, somebody should tell its chief cheerleader -- First Lady Michelle Obama -- that its actually backfiring.
Officials in New Yorks Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake school district have become the latest to opt out of the National School Lunch Program, citing hungry, frustrated children plus lost income.
[Food service manager Nicky] Boehm and her staff worked hard to implement the new regulations, but there were just too many problems and too many foods that students did not like and would not purchase. Students complained of being hungry with these lunches and the district lost money. I'm confident we can do better on our own next year, assistant superintendent Chris Abdoo said in a news release.
The lunch program lost about $100,000 for the school year, which is roughly the cost of one teaching position.
Students felt they weren't getting good value for their money, Boehm said. The high schoolers especially complained the portion sizes were too small, and many more students brought in lunch from home.
One example provided by the district that was a turn off to elementary students included canned green beans and part of a chicken patty on a mini croissant.
This districts action comes on the heels of the Catlin, Illinois, district doing the same. Officials there complained the federal guidelines were too restrictive.
The USDA -- which manages the National School Lunch Program -- has estimated it will cost school districts $3.2 billion to implement the new Michelle Obama-inspired mandates.
Thats a lot of money to spend to make sure kids go hungry at school. Dont be surprised if many more school districts around the nation dump this program before the new semester starts in the fall.
Well if the menu was Beef Wellington, and Scottish Eggs it wouldn’t be so bad.
Either my mother or my sister and I made our lunches every day. The exception being pizza day or when mom or dad would bring us lunch- a box of Kentucky Fried Chicken or chicken from Little Mint was especially welcomed back then.

And I bet the end result will be even fatter students because they are so hungry when they get home they overeat. Or bring more food to school and overeat just the same. Libs just dont seem to get common sense or human behavior. I think its because they live in a fantasy / virtual world with rainbows and unicorns.
Our son in law is from England and I bought an English comfort food cookbook to learn to make a few of his favorites . There are some good ones, but I must agree that there are more than a few which do not agree with American taste buds. Bacon sandwiches, eggy bread ( French toast slathered with ketchup), and baked bean sandwiches to name a few.
Sorry Leigh, I love you a lot, but yech !
Or one that should be popular on Perversity day meals:
“Spotted Dick”...
Ewww all the fancy jewelry and fancy gown can’t make Bigfoot look pretty - sorry.
It’s funny you mentioned Baked Bean Sandwiches! I saw the Beatles eating those on an old music video on “You Tube” recently! I couldn’t figure out what it was, until I read one of the comments. A person said they were eating beans on toast or bread. It showed on an old music video with one of their songs playing in the background; and George Harrison was putting beans on toast or bread and folding it over to eat it! I also saw Paul and the other guys eating what looked like fish and chips, or a sandwich, in a wrapper on another video. Of course, as most of us know, Paul is now a Vegetarian; so that was weird to see him eating that back then, because he wasn’t always one!
ha ha
...looks like it’s made out of fishing lures
You should have served him Egg McMuffins............
He loves those baked bean sandwiches- but it’s hard to find the right kind of baked bean here - it has to be a certain kind. Most American baked beans aren’t right, and neither is the bacon, according to him. The baked beans in the green Heinz can come pretty close, if you ever want to make an authentic bean sandwich, and give it a try.
Crack up about Paul McCartney eating meat!
He likes American food, but sometimes, you want your childhood favorites, you know! They did live in England for a bit, and you should hear my daughter complain about having no ranch dressing, and no ice in a coke!

Putting an affirmative action lawyer in charge of children’s nutrition is a bad idea in the first place.
