Alex Barron is a regional general manager for Wal-Mart U.S. responsible for about 90 stores and 30,000 associates in the region, including all planned stores for Washington, D.C.
For almost three years, Wal-Mart has worked on a plan to bring new stores to Washington, D.C., and we are now close to opening our first location here. Unfortunately, the city may soon adopt legislation that discriminates against business and threatens to undo all that we have accomplished together.

The liberal way: Find golden goose. Kill golden goose.
LRAA reads like something that came out of Atlas Shrugged. Basically says large companies can pay more, so they have to, regardless of the already law minimum wage.
What’s the requirement to be on the DC Council — an IQ of about 75 is about all I can believe based on their actions in response to the way WMT has worked with the community. WMT went way out of the way at every turn to accommodate the desires from the surveys and the DC Council wants to pull the rug from under them. They’ll end up with nothing and blaming WMT — watch and see I’m right on this.
The liberal way: Find golden goose. Kill golden goose. Eat Golden Goose. Wake up the next morning and complain there are no eggs to eat.....
Fixed it for ya!
I cancelled my membership in Sam's Club and will not purchase anything from Wal-Mart.
Some of the replies on the paper’s comments columns were real gems...and demonstrate why liberals really should be under constant adult supervision.
And also why few, if any of them - have ever actually established a successful business.
Screw 'em!
I haven’t in at least 3 years.
“The liberal way: Find golden goose. Kill golden goose”
Find golden goose, steal its eggs, work it to death, eat it.”

You beat me to it. Exactly like Atlas Shrugged.
The WaPo comments section on this article is about to go into meltdown mode - the rate of comment coming in is faster than I can click down and read. Even more interesting is the fact the WaPo editorial page called out the Council for their anti-business actions.
Guessin’ some Council members feel they didn’t get enough grease from Wally World.
Do they enjoy being the victims of armed robbery and/or the trashing of their property?
I think they should just walk away and let “the District” continue to do without stores that carry affordable merchandise.
Where are you going to find that many people in DC to actually work in the stores? The vast majority of people in DC are either working for the government or on the government dole.
Wal-Mart should STOP construction until they know the outcome of the vote in the city council.
And put up a sign explaining why it stopped.
Because they asked the community what it wanted, worked with the powers that be, didn’t accept government incentives, and then refused to hike wages to $5 above minimum wage?
I don’t see this as a reason why I need to pay higher prices to support a bunch of DC denizens that want pay higher than normal. I don’t see any of this that will keep me from buying at Walmart, either.
The thugs that run Wash DC had better be careful. WMT has threatened to cancel construction of three planned stores.
I recall an article about Wal*Mart closing a successful store in Canada solely because the town government got too uppity.
I don’t blame them. Government has screwed over enough people. If they want to direct what Walmart does, what it pays, where it builds, then Government should buy the damned company.
well, theoretically, numerous unemployed black youth in the District will be applying for these jobs.
