As the violent standoff between the Egyptian military and President Mohamed Morsy continues, U.S. ambassador to Egypt Anne Patterson has become a lightning rod for critics of U.S. policy in the country.
The tip of the spear for U.S.-Egypt diplomacy, Patterson's June 18 speech discouraging street protests has come to symbolize the administration's inability to recognize the potency of Egypt's liberal opposition. "Some say that street action will produce better results than elections," Patterson said. "To be honest, my government and I are deeply skeptical."
Now, with the Egyptian military's 48-hour deadline for Morsy to yield to protesters demands passed, observers fear the outbreak of widespread violence between Morsy's Islamist supporters and moderate critics, and many wonder if the U.S. could've taken a harder line on the Brotherhood during its 10-month rule.
Patterson in particular resisted opportunities to criticize the Morsy government as it implemented increasingly authoritarian policies. In a memorable May interview with the Egyptian English-language news sit Ahram Online, she repeatedly dodged pointed questions about Morsy's leadership. "The fact is they ran in a legitimate election and won," she said. "Of course it is challenging to be dealing with any new government. However, at the state institutional level, we are for instance still liaising with the same military and civil service personnel, and thus have retained the same long-established relations."

You couldn't be more wrong. Anne is a first rate career diplomat who has served in some of the toughest and most dangerous places in the world. I have worked with her and have the highest respect for her.
Patterson entered the Foreign Service in 1973.
She served as a US State Department Economic Officer and Counselor to Saudi Arabia from 1984 to 1988 and then as a Political Counselor at the United States Mission to the United Nations in Geneva from 1988 to 1991.
Patterson served as State Department Director for the Andean Countries from 1991 to 1993. She served as Deputy Assistant Secretary for Inter-American Affairs from 1993 to 1996.
Patterson served as United States Ambassador to El Salvador from 1997 to 2000, and then as United States Ambassador to Colombia from 2000 to 2003. While ambassador to Colombia, Patterson and U.S. Senator Paul Wellstone were the alleged targets of a failed bomb plot while on an official visit to the Colombian town of Barrancabermeja. From 2003 to 2004 Patterson served as Deputy Inspector General of the US State Department.
In August 2004, Patterson was appointed Deputy U.S. Permanent Representative to the United Nations. Patterson became acting Permanent Representative to the United Nations after John Danforth resigned, effective January 20, 2005. An extended delay in the confirmation of John R. Bolton by the Senate (ending when Bolton assumed the position on August 1, 2005, after a recess appointment) caused Patterson to served as interim permanent representative longer than expected.
Patterson became Assistant Secretary of State for International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs on November 28, 2005, serving until May 2007. President George W. Bush appointed Patterson as the United States Ambassador to Pakistan after Ryan Crocker left that post to become Ambassador to Iraq. She served in Pakistan between July 2007 and October 2010.
In May 2011 U.S. President Obama nominated Patterson to be the U.S. Ambassador to Egypt. On June 30, 2011, the United States Senate confirmed Patterson by unanimous consent to be the United States Ambassador to Egypt.
No doubt, it would be best to replace her at this point from both the standpoint of acceptability to the new regime and for her personal safety. She was the messenger and the message no longer resonates. The originator of the message is Obama and his advisers. If we really want change, they are the ones who need to be replaced.
Still blaming the video? What does it matter?
The reality is, America would have more than enough oil pumped right here, if it weren't for the Libs.
Didn't she already apologize for the video? At least the Cairo embassy did! ;-)
Obastard is rooting for the horse that won the last race.
Look for the USA Ambassator to Egypt to be next to be thrown under the bus.
I hope for her sake, the gets smart and gets the hell out of Egypt. Her boss WILL leave her to the wolves.
He and Hillary have a pattern.
TEACHER: "Now, class, does anyone know why this was so???"
THIRD GRADER: "Because her boss has acted the same way"
Thank you for giving the facts about Patterson. This is what FR is all about...providing us the best information (and usually before anyone else has it!).
Okay, I stand corrected on her background and experience. I’ll take your word on it that she is competent.
Why doesn’t her boss fly in and take care of this roadbump?
Pray for America to Wake Up
You have to wonder how obama is able to find so many people who agree with him. He has some strong power behind him.
How do you say “Morsi” in English?
“Obama”
How do you say “Obama” in Egyptian (Arabic)? “Obama”
Same old, same old.
I'd rather she wait until the moving van arrives.......
He’s probably out back somewhere staring blankly at his Purple Hearts. john kerry...ultimate loser.

Yep, Obama and his whole gang have their heads up their Fascist butts.
Thanks mandaladon.
