Is cursive writing dead?
CBS ^

A single sentence, uttered in the trial of George Zimmerman for the shooting of teenager Trayvon Martin, has catapulted an issue into the national spotlight.

When asked if she could read a letter in court, witness Rachel Jeantel, her head bowed, murmured with embarrassment, "I don't read cursive," according to court testimony.

Is it any surprise that cursive -- the looped, curvaceous style of handwriting that's been a mainstay of education for generations -- is all but dead? [15 Weird Things We Do Everyday, and Why]

"Cursive should be allowed to die. In fact, it's already dying, despite having been taught for decades," Morgan Polikoff, assistant professor of education at the University of Southern California's Rossier School of Education, told The New York Times.

My son is disgraphic. He can’t spell when he prints, but he can when he writes in cursive. Strange that a school would punish teachers for teachin it.

“Cursive is White Privilege. Script fonts are racist”

That’s right; this illiterate pile of lard is actually a civil rights hero for freeing blacks from the constraints of cursive (and “white” education in general).

Never mind that cursive is simply a more efficient way of writing; I’m sure the author is painfully aware of how some groups perform in that category as well.

Any kind of writing for more than a page or two would cramp me. Now I type. Pen to paper is for short things like shopping lists.

Cursive writing was invented to make fun of boys just like the chair thing.

It is just another way of society trying to feminize men. Yes one does need a good signature but other than that what is t good for menus at over priced fancy French restaurants?

Cursive is just another example of people not wanting to take the time to write right. It is faster than neatly printing each letter. It does have a place for wedding invitations, graduations and other things ladies do like tea socials.

I sure there are more stupid or reactionary responses but that all I can think of now.

Oh ya

How many people have died because of a doctors poor hand writing?

In third grade stupid cursive writing kept me from a perfect report card.

If she can't read it, how the hell did she write it?

She admitted someone else wrote the letter for her.

No; you would never know at that age (playing soccer & manhunt, going to movies or arcades). It only became obvious as we got older, when he would glance at things that would take a minute to read and act like he’d read it - in 10 seconds. He had untreated dyslexia.

I believe public schools in Texas stopped teaching cursive a few years back. I remember being shocked when I heard about it. I could be wrong as the public schools are really good around Dallas where I am. I can’t believe how many freepers are okay with this. I remember plenty of friends who used print when they should of used cursive growing up - but to me it seemed more difficult. I usually write cursive or a mix. To not teach it is ridiculous.

In the future schools want to go paperless (save the earth crap) and use modules - perfect for indoctrination.
Mostly powerpoint info and then multiple choice where answering and thinking correctly (political correctness) will become a substitute for intelligence.

Truly ignorant and sad.
Technology is being used in a limited fashion to cause society to regress; while being told it’s advancing; suckers.

In her testimony the day before, she claimed it was a letter she herself had written. And then when asked to read it, she claims she doesn’t read cursive.

Talk about ignant....but of course, it must be her “culture” that she was raised in.

From what I’ve seen, most of her vocabulary is comprised of four letter words.

My father had beautiful cursive handwriting. Sometimes I come across something he wrote and admire just the way that he formed his letters, and his signature.

I think that my cursive is pretty good, but it's from a later time when handwriting was taught more as a useful skill than an art.

In my son's school, I asked if they were going to teach cursive and was told that the time for this had been taken away by the need to prepare for state mandated testing.

So I'm thinking of teaching him myself this summer. That might be our first step into homeschooling.

I'm willing to cut her some slack. Based on the writing above the date, it looks like the pen was kicking her a$$.
