PHOENIX, AZ --(Ammoland.com)- I havent seen anything that suggests foul play of any kind, to me, its strictly supply and demand, and it shows you what panic in a market looks like.
Rationing and price spikes are the result of demand far outstripping supply.
Sure, government ammo purchases should give you pause, its the reason were all armed.
A trusted source provided this:
Take for example .22LR ammunition. The industry as a whole (all manufacturers combined) is setup to produce 4,200,000,000 (4.2 Billions) .22 LR annually. That is running all the machines, full capacity all the time, all manufacturers together.
There is NOTHING they can do to produce more.
That corresponds to 230,137 cartridge per State per day, which is 460 bricks of 500 .22lr per day per State. That means that if less than 50 people per day in each State are buying 10 bricks of .22, it is enough to dry up the entire supply as it is being manufactured.
News from ammo makers seems OK too, but its right to be wary. Trust but verify. How do you do that?
If you dont have ammo, youre stuck in a high market. If youre like many Americans, youll comfortably ride this out until the market corrects.

All I know is that I bought the last two boxes of my favorite 30-06 load today simply because they were there.
The list, Ping
Let me know if you would like to be on or off the ping list
i guess adding more machines is out of the question...
“That means that if less than 50 people per day in each State are buying 10 bricks of .22, it is enough to dry up the entire supply as it is being manufactured. “
So, the manufacturing capacity for the entire US is only 500 bricks a day per State? That doesn’t pass the gut check.
How do we know that there is only the capacity to manufacture 4.3 billion rounds a year 24x7?
I am real happy I was already stocked up before the crunch, but I’d like to see a correction before I burn off a lot of my stock.
Fairly good deal on 500 loose US Mililtary Green Tip NATO LAKE CITY M855 (2013), .223/5.56 62gr, for $375. Free shipping. I ordered 2 cases. Not as good as all the cases’ prices I bought since 2002, but that was then; this is now.

FYI.
“That doesnt pass the gut check.”
Something does seem odd because I remember in the good old days - before Obama’s first election - I could drive to any Walmart in the state and find several thousand rounds of CCI minimags in 100 round plastic boxes in each store no matter what season it was. I can clearly remember sales and tables with piles of boxes containing said ammo on display! Now, however, I can’t even find the stuff to begin with!
I realize that tens of millions of guns have been sold - thanks to Obama! - but it seems that the ammo industry isn’t even remotely coming close to meeting demand.
Adding more machines is a waste if you’re still paying for them after demand returns to normal.
I paid $4 per box of 50 for 250 rounds of 22 longs. It’s all I need in a panic market. Shot 5 bunnies off my porch the first day. The garden is bunny free now.
When you’re used to supply always being there to meet demand, empty shelves are a shock - even when demand very slightly outstrips supply.
I picked up a box of .22 mag today at $15.99. I think thats it for me til the prices come down. Mr. GG2 got the last two boxes of .40 cal at Wally World the other day. Its hard to stop. :-)
“i guess adding more machines is out of the question...”
If the brass, primers, powder aren’t there, no amount of machines can produce it. Shortages are across the board. You can’t load your own without supplies
“All I know is that I bought the last two boxes of my favorite 30-06 load today simply because they were there.”
That is a big part of the problem. Not criticizing the poster for buying “just because it was there” (I do the same thing). The demand is outstripping the supply and will continue for some time
That simple sentence describes the entire problem. The current ammo shortage is not due to government purchases or any of the other conspiracy theories promulgated by kooks that have more spare money than common sense.
The National Shooting Sports Foundation, that monitors such matters, reported yesterday that ammunition imported into the USA during April exceeded that exported by 248 million rounds. For the low information folks, that is 1/4 Billion rounds! In just one month!
We have met the enemy. A lot of them post right here on this forum.
“The demand is outstripping the supply and will continue for some time”
Not questioning that situation at all. It just seems that we all used to shoot so much more but there seems to be less than that on the shelves anymore. Just a perception I suppose.
I just want some dayum 22LRs, otherwise I’ll have to dry up all my loud stuff.
The brick & mortar stores will be the last to improve.
Check gunbot.net regularly. You can plot the market pretty well that way.
.223/5.56 is a lot more available and prices are edging down, albeit slowly. But the trend is there. PMC Bronze @ $9.95 a box today. More sellers are not limiting purchases.

As awful as 22LR is price wise, there is more appearing there. Prices are not improving, but availability is minutely trending better.

9mm is sky high, but the stuff is now there, much more so than a couple of months ago.

Or go to ammoseek.com daily and see how things are.
Things are getting better if you are willing to mail order your ammo. Might as well, the Feds already know who you are. Although, if/when supplies improve in the stores, I’m going back to cash only purchases.
My concern is that the fascists in DC are going to bring the panic back up to full throttle. Either we get a shooting they hype, or they engineer some sort of Reichstage event if the natural course of events doesn’t present the right opportunity.
Yeah, we took it for granted that it would stay that way. The number of new gun owners grew at a rate no one anticipated. We’re all panic buying too (I’m as guilty as anyone). Supplies of the raw materials for reloading aren’t catching up any more than the finished goods. That’s what has me worried. Can’t make bullets without brass and primers
I think .22LR must be less profitable for the ammo mfg companies so there is not too much incentive for them to try and keep up with demand for it right now.
