(Newser) It's bad enough that Carie Charlesworth is dealing with an abusive ex-husbandbut now she's also out of a job due to the situation. After a "very bad weekend" involving her ex in January, Charlesworth warned the principal at San Diego's Holy Trinity School to watch out for him. He did indeed show up in the school parking lot, forcing a lockdown. Charlesworth was immediately put on "indefinite leave," as were her four kids, who attended the school. Despite the fact that her ex is now in jail, three months later she was fired after 14 years with the Diocese of San Diego, NBC San Diego reports.
The termination letter from the diocese notes that, though school officials "feel deeply" for Charlesworth and are praying for her, her ex has a 22-year history of documented violence and has not been deterred by restraining orders. Out of fear that he may cause problems upon his release from prison (which they note could happen as soon as "next fall"), "we simply cannot allow you to return to work [at Holy Trinity] or, unfortunately, at any other school in the diocese," the letter states, adding that Charlesworth will continue to be paid through Aug. 9. Charlesworth, who plans to file a lawsuit, says, "That's why women of domestic violence don't come forward, because they're afraid of the way people are going to see them, view them, perceive them, treat them."
Should she have been given the axe? Or were school officials being jerks?
The husband is getting out of jail in June. If he had been locked up longer there would be no reason to dismiss her. But because her husband is unstable and therefore a threat to the school while she works there. I can see the school’s position.
difficult situation given that there are a lot of innocent kids whose safety may be at risk. Very difficult situation.
tacit recognition that her restraining order ain’t worth spit.
The fiduciary obligation of the school to protect its students is paramount to their duty to provide any given teacher with employment. Unfortunately, in California the state denies people the means to defend themselves so termination appears to be the only choice the school had.
Wow. What a position to be in.
And like said above...restraining orders aren’t worth spit.
The school’s first duty is to the children they serve. The teacher’s personal situation presents a threat. Her job security cannot come before that.
That said, the Catholic church should offer to arrange a secret relocation to a new diocese and teaching job, preferably with new identities.
And the twit should buy a gun, she is not safe.
I stand with the school. If the husband were to show up there with a gun or two and murdered several children the school would have been held responsible for the slaughter.
He did indeed show up in the school parking lot, forcing a lockdown.

They could help her find a job out of state? Take up a collection to hire her security? But if her presence is going to draw a crazed man to the school, I don’t see how she can stay. sad, very sad.
They have a duty to protect the kids in the school. This guy has shown that he will ignore restraining orders (aka worthless pieces of paper). He therefore will also ignore any conditions of his parole. He has already tried to get at her (or the kids) at the school, and he will doubtless try again because these idiots don't give up.
The school is now on notice of this danger, and if they allowed her to continue to teach and the guy showed up again with a gun (or a bomb, or a car, or a can of gasoline) and a bunch of kids wound up dead, the school would be liable in damages for failing to protect the kids.
It's hard on her, but the school really doesn't have much of a choice.
This one hit yesterday, my position is the same. If your life troubles are to a point where think you need to warn your boss that somebody intending to do violence might be coming that’s a good day to call in sick and handle the situation away from work. All employers advice employees to keep home troubles at home, that goes double when there’s violence. It’s unfortunate for her, and I hope she finds her way out of the situation, but the school has to get rid of her.
This.
Especially since they were very well-informed of the situation ahead of time.
Jerks.
Then let the school hire armed guards. It’s not her fault her ex-husband is a nutbar.
This is one of the very valid reasons for CCW on school campuses.
Really? Why?
As you can see - you are the only one on this thread to think that.
I hope she sues the school administrators for everything they’re worth.
It’s THEIR job to protect their employees.
Its not her fault her ex-husband is a nutbar.

Thats a big assumption. As you know most domestic violence victims often take the bum back. They perpetuate the violence.
And how generous of you to advocate the school hire armed guards to protect against a crazed man. I’m sure you will be the first to send a personal check for $5,000. That ought to cover the first month.
