It is clearly about data mining and NOT national security. When they were tipped off in advance about jihadist training and comments by the Boston Marathon bombers, the Ft. Hood jihadist, and the Benghazi embassy attackers, the administration did nothing.

The WSJ had an interesting series around that time on the campaign data collection as well, and some examples like several different invitations to a given fundraiser, tuned to the recipients viewpoints. Basically everyone getting campaign news filtered for them so no one would see the contradictory information others were getting.
The gubmint is free to listen to your phone calls and read your emails...since these were not around at the time the 4th Amendment was incorporated, right?
