UPDATE: Why Govt. Source leaked PRISM

Additional information is being reported that confirms what most of us have always suspected. NSA is collecting all our email data, tracking our movements, our photographs, our documents, etc. Also factor in the fact that a court recently ruled that Obama is free to collect our DNA without being found guilty of any crime.

WaPo reports the following:

The National Security Agency and the FBI are tapping directly into the central servers of nine leading U.S. Internet companies, extracting audio, video, photographs, e-mails, documents and connection logs that enable analysts to track a person’s movements and contacts over time.

The highly classified program, code-named PRISM, has not been disclosed publicly before. Its establishment in 2007 and six years of exponential growth took place beneath the surface of a roiling debate over the boundaries of surveillance and privacy. Even late last year, when critics of the foreign intelligence statute argued for changes, the only members of Congress who knew about PRISM were bound by oaths of office to hold their tongues.

An internal presentation on the Silicon Valley operation, intended for senior analysts in the NSA’s Signals Intelligence Directorate, described the new tool as the most prolific contributor to the President’s Daily Brief, which cited PRISM data in 1,477 articles last year. According to the briefing slides, obtained by The Washington Post, “NSA reporting increasingly relies on PRISM” as its leading source of raw material, accounting for nearly 1 in 7 intelligence reports.

That is a remarkable figure in an agency that measures annual intake in the trillions of communications. It is all the more striking because the NSA, whose lawful mission is foreign intelligence, is reaching deep inside the machinery of American companies that host hundreds of millions of American-held accounts on American soil.

The technology companies, which participate knowingly in PRISM operations, include most of the dominant global players of Silicon Valley. They are listed on a roster that bears their logos in order of entry into the program: “Microsoft, Yahoo, Google, Facebook, PalTalk, AOL, Skype, YouTube, Apple.” PalTalk, although much smaller, has hosted significant traffic during the Arab Spring and in the ongoing Syrian civil war.

UPDATE: Politico reports the following:

Why did a government source leak information of this program, dubbed “PRISM,” to the Post? What follows is perhaps the most chilling paragraph I’ve read to date about U.S. government surveillance:

Firsthand experience with these systems, and horror at their capabilities, is what drove a career intelligence officer to provide PowerPoint slides about PRISM and supporting materials to The Washington Post in order to expose what he believes to be a gross intrusion on privacy. “They quite literally can watch your ideas form as you type,” the officer said.

In the wake of last night’s Guardian report about the NSA’s collection of Verizon phone user metadata, the New York Times editorial board argued that the Obama administration “has now lost all credibility” in defending its abuses of executive power. That was before the report about PRISM, which unlike the Verizon metadata, includes surveillance of user content.

The Daily Bell has said for a long time that Google and Facebook were never finaially independent and that their numbers never added up and it was obvious that there was government funding and that they were an arm of the government.

And people (like us) should point out questionable practices because the government is surely not going to do it. In fact, from what we can tell, Google is pretty much a bought-and-paid-for adjunct to the US intelligence community.

We’ve written about that and so have a number of other publications. Both Google and Facebook are thoroughly penetrated by snoops, from what we can tell. In fact, there are plenty of reports that the CIA and affiliated facilities invested in both companies when they were much smaller.

What is certainly true is that Google bosses don’t seem especially affrighted about privacy concerns. They keep getting caught but nonetheless continue as if nothing has happened.

Most recently this caught our eye in the Daily Mail: “Google is sued by dozens of customers after ‘snooping on 10million iPads and mobiles’” (Paragraphing ours.)

A company that time after time blithely flouts privacy concerns is one that is seemingly above the law. We doubt that Google executives are all that concerned about the ethical aspects of their actions.

But from our point of view, this is what happens when you mingle intelligence operations with legitimate business. The hybrid uses its government-granted muscle to become a given industry’s dominant force ... damn the consequences.

Conclusion: Google and Facebook both seem to fit this profile. Each company is a serial privacy offender and show little compunction about continuing to engage in a variety of unethical practices.

That is what is happening and has been planned out.
first attack when the black Representative made it clear on the House steps the Tea Party person supposedly confronted him and pushed him.
Of course that was not true but that initiated the beginning of the plan the Dem’s have made and it has been successful.
But to what end...?

This has been going on for some time. Didn't Clinton have a program called echelon that did similar work on a smaller scale ? So did Bush.

The problem is that these programs have a tendency to creep. I the hands of patriotic leaders it is a powerful tool to be used wisely.


You are correct about Clinton and Bush, but I don't consider them to have any kind of mission creep - if you read about what Poindexter and the Bush administration wanted to do in 2001/2002, this is right up their alley. It's very clear now that this stuff was not canceled by Congress, it simply changed scope, was broken up into smaller pieces, and lived on quietly. Many FReepers predicted that by the way.
