I remember in the last hurricane how meteorologists (not broadcasters) were standing out in ocean noticing how the tide was rising so fast around them with the incoming hurricane that it was difficult for them to remain standing.
But your distinction between meteorologist and research scientist is a valid one. I’ll be the first to admit that I’m not a research scientist on tornados. But apart of understanding the formulation of tornados, which can be done without driving in front of them by 100 yards, I fail to understand the value of this type of research. And Twister is one of my favorite movies.
When I ponder the term "Storm Chasers", two other words come to mind, "Dumb" and "Asses"...

And since you are posting we can assume you had adequate cover. I was plowing a field on an open Tractor when my Uncle came screaming up Screaming “ YOU IDIOT “ ... we both ran to an Old Barn, he ripped the lid off of a Feed Bin and made me get under it, glad he did ... bout 3 minutes later big Hail was pelting us through the roof of that old barn... as he said “It only takes one to kill you” cause a few were a lot bigger than the others.
The reason he was calling me an idiot is that the sky had turned from regular blue to green then to purple... but what I noticed most is what I noticed least after the fact ... wherever you are at go outside and you will hear birds singing ... complete silence ... they all quit or had left the area (I couldn’t have heard them anyway I was on a Tractor).

Yowsers!! I hadn’t seen that one, yet, at least, not the part where it caught the SUV rolling through the grass. Shows the importance of side curtain air bags!!
One thing which surprised me is that Florida has about as many tornadoes as tornado alley. They do seem to be not quite as severe here which might be because of all the trees.
I am pretty sure a Geography prof once told me that the most severe tornadoes occur along an area of North Alabama, North Mississippi and areas of Tennessee which are near those places.

Best to watch from the edge and outside clouds. A tornadoe only has life from its host, the cloud formation.
Watched a funnel form between Broken Arrow and Tulsa. It didn’t touch down but it was kewel.
When hail was predicted I’d drive downtown to the towers and park inthe garage.
Insurance doesn’t cover hail.

Florida has had a few EF3, two EF4 and no EF5 tornadoes. Those are central and north whereas down by Miami there are rarely any tornadoes except EF0 or EF1's inside of hurricanes. So for strong tornadoes Florida has a meager amount like much of the rest of the east outside of tornado alley.
A couple of the ingredients are warm humid air (plenty of that in FL), dry air (not much) and a strong jet (only in winter). Tornado alley is what it is mainly because of the presence of the Rockies and the dry air produced east of the Rockies hitting the warm moist air from the gulf.
It started around 7 and lasted till near midnight. The last couple of hours I was just about to go crazy as it seemed it would go on forever. Just about constant lightning hitting close, not so close and a bit further away but enough hitting close that it was a good chance I would be hit especially if it did not stop.
I finally got to sleep and my tent was saved mainly because Every time it seemed ready to blow over, I held on till it let go. The next morning I noticed trees blown down all over the campground Limbs literally covering the ground. The only tent left standing was mine mainly because I was the only one who stayed in my tent. Everyone else went to the ranger headquarters till it was over. We do get very serious ones in Florida and I had had lightning strike a tree right next to the house and take it down and also plenty knock out TV sets etc. which were plugged in Then a few years later I was at Oolagah again and the exact same thing happened again. This time I was in a 35 foot Jayco and by luck it was parked below a hill which saved it from most of the wind.
I’ve been in two tornados since I moved to Kansas in 1990. I witnessed the Hesston tornado when the twister originated near Castleton. Being the stupid kid I was, I drove into the path and ended up taking shelter with an elderly couple while it crossed their property. Scared the crap out of me.
The last one was in 2008 in Manhattan. I was holed up in a meat lab classroom on the K-State campus when it hit. We were well protected but I did feel my ears pop when the storm hit Weber Hall. It was a relatively small twister but it still caused 6 million damage to The building alone.
I have no desire to see another tornado.
