PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) - An Arizona man on an Alaska Airlines flight from Anchorage to Portland tried to open the emergency row exit door as the plane descended into Portland, officials said.
The attempt happened on Flight 132 around the 10,000-feet level Monday morning, said Annie Linstrom, a spokeswoman for the Portland International Airport.
The flight crew and some fellow passengers restrained 23-year-old Alexander Herrera until the plane landed.
Port of Portland police then boarded the plane, which originated in Anchorage, AK, to take him into custody.
Passengers told police Herrera made unusual statements before trying to open the door, but the FBI did not elaborate on what was said.
There were no injuries to any of the passengers on the flight.
The emergency exits have lock mechanisms to prevent passengers from opening them without approval from the flight crew so there was no danger to anyone on board, Port of Portland police said.
Herrera is being booked into the Multnomah County Detention Center. He'll likely make his first court appearance Tuesday before a federal magistrate

“I’ve seen this movie before!”
> Allah ackbar?
THAT is a dirty lie!

He said AllahU ackbar.
What the heck is it with "reporters" these days? What the heck did he say? If the FIBbies won't tell you, surely there were some passengers available to interview.
That’s what we thought. How much money did it cost to lift off, turn around, land again, close door, then take off again? That fuel cost isn’t “gimme sum reglar, please.”
Its called PRESSURIZATION!! The cabin pressure diferential between outside pressure and inside cabin pressure at that altitude is at least 4 or 5 psi. On a door about 2200 square inches in area that amounts to more than 8500 pounds of force that idiot would have to muster to open the thing. Not possible. Actually you can't even open the door on the ground until the a/c is depressurized the force required is too great.
Cabin pressure is typically about equal to air pressure at 8,000 feet. Below that elevation, internal and external pressures are equalized, and only the lock mechanisms keep the (inward-opening) door from opening.
D Cooper?
If he is, they’re going to keep that information from the public.
No need to upset the non-muzzies.
If he was a tea party member, the media would be all over it, and would report every small detail of what he said. If he made statements to the effect that he was anti-government, or anti-any politically correct group or cause, that also would be emphasized in extreme detail by the liberals in the MSM.
I would have had everyone buckle up and 2 miles from landing would have kicked him out .
Thanks for flying with us today. Your on yer own now.
Not sure why you think I have anything backwards.
Many planes have electrical locks on the doors so they cannot be opened without a crew member allowing it. This keeps passengers, etc. from opening the door when cabin pressurization is no longer a factor.
Passengers restrained him.......
Wonder if got a good a** kicking!
He is NOT a mexican! That face reeks of middle eastern.
