The Senate on Wednesday rejected a Republican bid to turn the federal food stamp program over to the states.

The current program, known as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP, is administered by the Agriculture Department and federal dollars are unlimited as long as recipients qualify. The program cost $78 billion last year, more than double the price in 2008.

A proposal by Sen. James Inhofe, R-Okla., to a wide-ranging farm bill would have converted the program into grants to states, which could decide how to use the money, with certain restrictions. The Senate rejected the amendment 60-36. …

Re: “SNAP (aka, Food Stamps) is administered by the Agriculture Department.”

Here in Washington state, that is not correct.

Here, and I assume in many other states, state employees administer Food Stamps.

States have considerable latitude to interpret eligibility rules.

For instance, in Washington state no one is required to show proof of legal residence in the USA to get Food Stamps.

Actually most food stamps are administered by county departments via county Health and Human Resources Departments aka Welfare Departments.

Of course they rejected it!

How else could they keep taking their 70% cut.

The Marxists want the gov't to control it so they can control WHO GETS THE BENEFITS. Due to unforeseen circumstances, sometimes registered Republicans needs assistance but the gubmint only gives hand-outs to 0bots. If the IRS denies Republican groups tax-exempt status and spies on Republicans' E-Mails and phone records, you can bet Republicans get no assistance from this gubmint.

If you're a Boston bomber, Maj. Hasan, illegal alien or 0bama supporter.. NO PROBLEM!

Hmmm.....

You sure?

Food Stamps are handled by DSHS in Washington state.

Perhaps the employees are county employees.

But DSHS is definitely a state agency.

I said administered, regardless of what agency, etc. the money is coming from. Most counties run welfare programs so the food stamps are handled there.

Adults who can’t “show proof of legal residence in the USA” aren’t awarded federal food stamps in the State of Washington. Their children may be. As far as the state food stamp program goes, I don’t know about the eligibility requirements.

Couldn’t find record of who voted for it on the net. Maybe not posted yet or I just don’t know how to find? Suggestions?

Re: “Adults who can’t “show proof of legal residence in the USA”

You misquote me.

I said they are not required to show it.

For instance, abused women and children (under 18) and victims of trafficking need only claim that is the case.

Any person who is appealing a deportation order is eligible.

Any person who has signed up for the DREAM Act (brought to USA as a child) or claims to provide essential support to an American citizen or Permanent Resident is eligible.

Those last two categories were created by Obama Executive Orders, and 99.6% of the applicants are granted “Deferred Prosecution,” which shows you what kind of bogus background checks the Federal Government does on immigrants.

I did notice that the state of Washington requires a Social Security Number for Food Stamps.

I have to think that is a political cosmetic that is easily avoided.

Otherwise, why would Food Stamps have so many eligible immigrant categories for people who do not have SS Numbers?
