There's poop in public pools, according to a new report.
Researchers at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) found genetic material from E. coli bacteria in 58 percent of public pools they tested during the summer of 2012.
This shows that "swimmers frequently introduced fecal material into pools," which could spread germs to other people, the researchers wrote in their report. E. coli bacteria are normally found in the human gut and feces.
They also found genetic material from bacteria called Pseudomonas aeruginosa, whichcan cause skin rashes and ear infections, in 59 percent of pools.
The fecal material in pools comes from swimmers not showering before getting into the water, and from incidents of defecation in pools, according to the report. The average person has 0.14 grams of fecal material on their "perianal surface" that can rinse into a pool if a person doesn't shower first, according to the report

I went swimming in a muddy hole in the Philippines when I was a kid, and thought it was great. There was a big old caribaou in that water hole, too.
Then a big pile surfaced near me, and I nearly died. Didn’t even consider that!
When I was a little kid, there was a mailbox that had mint growing around it. I used to pick the mint and pop it in my mouth. One day I saw a dog walk over, lift its leg and pee on it.
To this day, if I get a little sprig of mint on a dessert or something, I have to remove it...
Exactly. While it’s high on the “yuck” factor, don’t lose sight of the context.I swam in a lot of public pools as a kid, and oddly enough, I survived.
To all those over-reacting to this sensationalist tripe, just remember: fish have pooped — and worse — in the water you’re drinking.
Love the sign in Target bathroom: All employees MUST wash their hands. DUH.
Thats meant for the low information clerks.
Think about it. All of your purchase laced with Ecoli.

And a high percentage of your paper money has traces of cocaine.
Ever gotten high from that? Or gotten sick from a swim?
Didn’t think so.
From the article: “There were no samples that showed E. coli O157:H7, a toxin-producing E. coli strain that causes illness.”
Public pools dont REQUIRE a shower before you jump in???...GAAK!
This seems alarmist.
1. What are the actual levels of e coli they measured in pools (public and private)?
2. What health consequences have actually occurred?
3. Could it be that they have been listening to the gun-rights folks saying that pools are more dangerous than guns?
And to folks who only swim in your own backyard pools ...
Birds are pooping in your pool every day.
Need I say it: We’re all gonna die.
Exactly. It would have been a more interesting and informative article if it compared the amount of fecal matter and bacteria of various types in swimming pools to that present in natural bodies of salt and fresh water that have animals doing their business in them and have all kinds of run-off going into them. I am taking a wild guess that swimming pools are cleaner than “nature”.
“Years ago we were in a pool at a motel. A woman got in the pool with her baby, who had on nothing but a cloth diaper.”
Uhm, what about the now-popular “swim diapers”. Those are nothing but turd infusers
What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger. :)
But you still eat the dessert, right?
Imagine all the fish fornicating in that lake.
Thank IronJack. Too true...
Good point...
“Doody!”
Hmmm, good term. Brings the Obama administration to mind.
Yes, the word "taint" is suitably multifaceted.
I remember hearing that the chlorine smell associated with pools doesn't come from the chlorine alone, but from its reaction with urine in the water.
Nice.
I often use a cast iron frypan to cook breakfast over coals in my backyard BBQ, even in winter.
Of course my neighbors think I’m strange, but what do they know.
