The Winchester (Va.) Police Department is taking a close look at its officers' weapons holsters after an officer's gun accidentally went off in a special needs school bus.

The incident occurred Monday morning when a middle school student reached for a police officer's gun, reports TV3Winchester. Fortunately, no one was injured.

The officer had been dispatched to the bus to calm down the student. While the officer was sitting next to him, the student reached over and put his finger on the trigger of the weapon. The bullet went through the seat and hit the floor.

I wish they stated the type of gun.

My guess is Glock.

Kinda stupid incompetence like the security guard who missed hitting the gunman at Houston airport

Why have them if they cannot control their weapons

So the kid on the short bus “touched” the trigger huh? Are they sure it just didn’t “go off”?

Stupidest article I’ve read all day....

It was no accident, and I also find it hard to believe it happened as reported.

Unless the cop had already drawn the gun, I don’t see how anyone else could pull the trigger.

Wonder if it was a female officer.

Most LE holsters don’t leave the trigger exposed, and that’s a really good idea with no safety.

What holster allows a finger to be inserted and pull a trigger?

A waistline holster that uses static tension to hold the gun?

This guy wasn’t uniform and wearing a real holster?

Have you ever seen a holster for a pistol that leaves the trigger exposed? I haven’t!

I do not understand this.

Firstly, I do not ever keep a round in the chamber. Maybe that’s not a good policy for cops, but to me it’s an accident waiting to happen.

Secondly, my auto pistol, which is a Springfield .40 cal, has two safeties where the gun must be held in the hand thus pressing a plate on the backside of the handle, and the trigger finger must also depress a switch in the trigger before any pulling of the trigger can cause the hammer to hit the firing pin.

I call bovine excrement...no quality holster that an LEO should be wearing would allow for that.

Cops there have holsters that expose the trigger? That’s just nuts. Or there is a bit more to the story.

Impossible as stated, no LEO duty holster would permit access to the trigger.

There are a lot of semis chambered in various calibers, which have no external safety; Glocks being just one of them. I have a G32/.357sig, which stays in my safe; instead I carry CCW one of two 5” 1911 Kimber .45cal ACPs, round chambered, cocked and locked. The G32 always went unchambered after I saw a LEO shoot himself in the foot when drawing his service revolver.

A weapon does not accidentally fire when the trigger is pulled. That would be an intentional or negligent discharge by the trigger puller. If the weapon is holstered you should not be able to put a finger (even a tiny one) on the trigger. There is more to this!!!

Gotta be a Glock.

After my accident, and I had recovered enough to go back to NM to get my stuff, my brother drove me up in his truck. On the way back, we had a truck load of juicy theft material. We stopped at a DQ and brother went in. I told him I'd stay with the truck, because I still hurt pretty badly and needed to do a little bit of stretching before we finished that last 200 miles.

I was behind the truck, with one heel on the bumper, doing forward stretches, and some low-life came cruising by to relieve me of my property. My carry was behind the seat, brother's was in the console.

Brother carries a Glock. I hates 'em.

I got to the console, cleared nylon and 'splained that it was a Glock and they went off 'accidentally' all the time.

Lowlife made like a dot on the horizon.

I was very careful to not stick the booger hook near the bang switch.

“The officer had been dispatched to the bus to calm down the student.”

Cop sits next to student, pulls out gun.

“See this gun, Johnny? I’m given this to keep order. Only people like me can handle weapons like this.”

“Golly, gee, what does THIS do?”

BANG
