A Northwestern University Mexican student group finds eating tacos and drinking tequila to celebrate Cinco de Mayo racially offensive, and wants to see the practice come to an end. In a letter to the universitys paper, the Latin student group Alianza called for a respectful celebration to commemorate the Battles of Puebla, in which a vastly outnumbered, under-equipped Mexican army twice defeated the well-armed, well-trained French army, which had not lost a battle in over fifty years.
This is not unlike a uniquely American holiday, which commemorates the moment when 56 men affixed their signatures upon the Declaration of Independence to mutually pledge to each other [their] lives, [their] fortunes, and [their] sacred honor.
What followed was a bloody 8-year war in which a vastly outnumbered, under-equipped rag-tag group of patriots defeated the well-armed, well-trained [British] army, which had not lost a battle in over fifty years.

The graduate candidates are no door prize either.
Exactly.
My Jewish friends are not offended by lox and bagels. My Irish friends are not offended by beer and corned beef. etc.
So what, exactly, is offensive about tacos and tequila? Are you ashamed of your heritage? Of your food?
A few tacos and tequila shots can help you accomplish that.
Surprisingly enough, not in the northwest.
Evanston, Illinois
Many of the bars in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, celebrate Cinco de Mayo, I guess because we are the largest ‘American’ city in Canada, with about 70K US citizens. Unfortunately, most are Dhimmicrats!
My former employer used to have business interests in Mexico and I met a Mexican engineer who had moved to Canada. One of the Canadian Veeps, who’s addiction to beer is surpassed only by his adiction to money and power, invited any and all to a bar to celebrate this ‘holiday’. I asked the young Mexican engineer about celebrating this ‘holiday’, and it was news to him. He celebrated the Mexican independence day in September, but said he knew none who celebrated this ‘holiday’ in Mexico. Purely an American invention, pushed out to the world like some sort of St Paddy’s Day booze up!
That’s why I feel like throwing up on him! Tequila in margaritas. or is it vodka? or both. ughhhhhh
I think we should re-name cinco de mayo to St Patricks Day II and drink green beer then as well.
Two for the Irish and none for thee... sounds like the beginning of a great toast!
Midwest? I’ll lay odds there isn’t a “genuine” Mexican (IE, from Mexico) in the bunch of complainers. I live in AZ and the 5 May party described is exactly the kind of party you’d find happening in every third house in Phoenix. We don’t like the illegals here, but we love the legal folks very much. They’re good people.
I thought it was well known that grease cures squeals.
I guess I should be offended when somebody hands me a beer at next year’s July 4th barbeque.
I don’t see why they’re so upset. At our Cinco de Mayo celebration, we show the greatest respect as we set up our
blow-up Frito Bandito and Tecate bottle. The greatest
respect.
nobody is forcing them to drink, eat, or wear them.
Hey, if she wants a ban on Cinco de Mayo in the USA, I’m all for it. All it is is brainwashing our nation into accepting illegals specifically and eradicating our own heritage culture generally.
According to my understanding, Cinco de Mayo was a minor and largely uncelebrated observance until it caught on in the U.S. , so he's offended because it's not a real Mexican celebration, is what he's saying. Not that that makes much more sense.
I’m with you.
Furthermore, all governments and big companies stop kow-towing to the illegals printing huge signs and so on in Spanish.
Next problem , please . . .
I suppose this offends them, too...

My advise is for them is to go back to Mexico and stay there to enjoy the full flavor of their rich culture. Then they won't have to suffer such indignation from gringos.
A much better way for all concerned is to approach Cinco de Mayo with the attitude of eating the world class Sonoran Mexican cuisine, not just tacos, which can most certainly be augmented with all the other great cuisines produced in Mexico.
Then drinking not just 100% blue agave tequila, but taste testing the difference between “Blanco”, “Reposado” (aged under a year), and “Añejo (aged 1-3 years) *without* polluting the magnificent drink with mixers. It is a Mexican national treasure (except for the mass produced swill made by US companies.)
And if you are not a liquor drinker, try some of the better Mexican beers. And if you want to sympathize with the plight of Mexicans, try and get a bottle of the bitter and unpleasant “pulque”, which was all they had to drink before beer. Hard to find, and you will never want to drink it again. Easy to see why they much prefer beer.
