. . . . . .
The office of Sen. Ted Cruz, a Republican from Texas, sent out a press release Wednesday pushing five amendments he filed to the bill, which generally tightens enforcement and provides a path to legal status for undocumented immigrants.
Cruzs amendments seek to further tighten border security, streamline the legal immigration process, deny public benefits to those here illegally, reform the high-skilled worker visa program and prohibit a path to citizenship for the undocumented.
. . . . . .
In a press release, Americas Voice, a leading national group that advocates for more lenient immigration laws, singled out Cruzs anti-citizenship amendment as particularly worrisome.
This would not only destroy the path to citizenship in the Senate billthe popular heart of an immigration reform solutionbut also turn its back on 100 years of precedent in immigration policy, said the release.
Hearings on the bill are expected to continue an additional two weeks following Thursday's opening session, setting the stage for full Senate action on the bill in June.
Frank Sharry, executive director of Americas Voice, said the Republicans amendments did not bode well for bipartisan cooperation on the bill.

Of course. Any attempt to delay nearly immediate citizenship will be overturned in the courts.
That’s why we need to hold out for NO AMNESTY period.
” or do they really want to open the doors to breed democratic voters.”
BINGO!
Ted Cruz is calling their bluff.
I think this is a critical issue — let Cruz’ amendment stand!
Cruz also filed amendments that he says would “strengthen border security measures; reform the high-skilled temporary worker program; modernize, streamline and expand legal immigration; and prohibit federal, state or local entitlement benefits for those here illegally.”
“Cannot understand for the life of me why people who are elected to protect us would be giving away our country to foreign invaders.”

Maybe they are greedy, lying, robbing traitors who care only for their own enrichment and have zero moral fiber? Maybe they are just profoundly stupid. They apparently think that somehow they will never have to pay the price for their treachery.
If he files these amendments, is there a way for them to be blocked or dropped from the bill while the bill still moves forward?
I’m not clear on the procedures.
Yeah; Rubio’s been a great disappointment because he has turned out to be gullible and naive instead of young and idealistic. He looked magnificent compared to Charlie Crist.
Of course, Pee-Wee Herman would have looked good against Charlie Crist.
It’s entirely predictable that the character of Ted Cruz would be attacked for standing up to his principles. Republicans need to remember: Sticks and stones may break my bones...
I’m lovin’ my Ted Cruz more every single day that he fights for America and American values!
I’m from South Carolina, we’ll trade you one Linda Graham for a plug mule and you can keep the mule.
Well, as a Texan, you know I want on THIS ping list! :) Thanks!
Born in Canada, but a true American! His parents were not Canadian but American and Cuban/American as I recall.
I have lots of friends whose parents were born in Mexico, but they came here, got their citizenship and became responsible, productive Americans...as are their offspring.
To them 20 years is not too long if it gets them the ability to take over the government and finish the destruction of the U.S.
There are several others who are also excellent. Trey Gowdy, Mike Lee, and my favorite, Tom McClintock.
These amendments will kill the bill so far as the Democrats are concerned. Leahey’s amendment allowing for homosexuals to get their gay partner residency will kill the bill for conservatives. The whole issue is dead, just waiting for the body to hit the ground.
