. . . . . .
The office of Sen. Ted Cruz, a Republican from Texas, sent out a press release Wednesday pushing five amendments he filed to the bill, which generally tightens enforcement and provides a path to legal status for undocumented immigrants.
Cruzs amendments seek to further tighten border security, streamline the legal immigration process, deny public benefits to those here illegally, reform the high-skilled worker visa program and prohibit a path to citizenship for the undocumented.
. . . . . .
In a press release, Americas Voice, a leading national group that advocates for more lenient immigration laws, singled out Cruzs anti-citizenship amendment as particularly worrisome.
This would not only destroy the path to citizenship in the Senate billthe popular heart of an immigration reform solutionbut also turn its back on 100 years of precedent in immigration policy, said the release.
Hearings on the bill are expected to continue an additional two weeks following Thursday's opening session, setting the stage for full Senate action on the bill in June.
Frank Sharry, executive director of Americas Voice, said the Republicans amendments did not bode well for bipartisan cooperation on the bill.

Ted Cruz Ping!
It's about time we got one of those on our side. There are plenty on the other side.
The Rats on the committee will shoot it down.
Thank God for Ted Cruz!
Put a bill in that has everything the ‘rats want,
except put a 20 yr moratorium on voting rights -
then see if they vote for it.
Call their bluff, Ted! Do they actually want these people to be here so they can work and care for their families, etc, and add to the American story or do they really want to open the doors to breed democratic voters.
Cannot understand for the life of me why people who are elected to protect us would be giving away our country to foreign invaders.
That’s what this is you know.
These people are indeed foreign invaders.
Nothing should be done to make hem citizens until we stop more of them from invading us.
This is what? The 4th Amnesty? None of them worked before and this one won’t work either unless we control the borders.
Go home and do it right or forever forfeit any chance at citizenship.
I’d treat very carefully on this one. I believe that The Great One, Mark Levin, is correct in his legal opinion that the courts would never allow this sort of “second-class citizenship” and would hand them the vote after the fact.
Rubio keeps digging a larger hole for himself. Cruz is the only one out there looking out for us on this issue. The irony of a man born in Canada being the sole defender of our borders is just too much to observe.
Cruz is the only one in congress worth a crap.
The rest (GOP) are either overtly working with Dems (like McCain) or are play acting like they oppose them.
The Senate is a club where they just play opposition roles for the camera all scripted.
(You can be sure if Bengazi investigation is supported by McCain and Grahamnesty that it is going no-where, otherwise they would oppose it.)
Cruz goes right for their nerves.
I agree. There is almost no chance this would stand in the long run. I don’t know why we would want a 2 tiered society anyway. Even if it did persist it is a recipe for eternal strife and squabbling anyway.
I hope they stop playing games with the bill and just defeat it.
Cruz is more about doing what is good for the country and less about politics. We need another 534 just like him.
Trade you one Cruz for 25 Rubios.
“...Cruz is more about doing what is good for the country and less about politics. We need another 534 just like him....”
Yes Siree!! I contributed $500 to his campaign. It’s the best $500 I’ve spent in a long while.
Bully em, Ted!! Live up to the accusation!!!!
No, but we will trade you one Julian Castro for Rino Rubio.
:-D
Ted does not know that once these illegal immigrants are granted “legal status”, the next step is to introduce legislation (perhaps a year or more later) that grants them full citizenship rights—All it takes is one more Congress to amend the law or to make a new one.
Give them an inch, they will take a mile.
Is the border secure yet?
