Military device found on Cardiff beach Posted: Apr 21, 2013 7:32 PM PDT Updated: Apr 21, 2013 7:32 PM PDT CARDIFF-BY-THE-SEA (CNS) - A beachgoer walking along the Cardiff State Beach shoreline today came upon an explosive device and took it to lifeguards, but they called in the bomb squad, who rendered it safe, a sheriff's sergeant said. The citizen discovered the device on the beach off the 2700 block of South Coast Highway about 1:10 p.m., collected it and brought it to a lifeguard tower where it was placed on the sand, according to sheriff's Sgt. Roberto Lopez. Lifeguards immediately called the sheriff's department and deputies evacuated the area, Lopez said. They then brought in the bomb squad. "The Sheriff's Bomb Arson Unit responded to the scene and after rendering the explosive device safe, collected it to be disposed of in a prudent manor," Lopez said in a statement. No one was injured, Lopez said. The device was deemed an unidentified military ordnance, according to Lopez. The area remained closed for about two hours, the sergeant said.

For those, like me, who didn’t/dont know, Cardiff State Beach is in CA, near San diego.
Yes, always take unexploded ordnance to lifeguards; we’re all taught that in school.
Military does lots of training in that area
Like the little old lady with a car on fire that drove in to a gas station for help.
Any heavy surf there lately that could wash the device on shore?
Just south of Camp Pendleton. There’s been a lot of military activity in that area for the last 75 years. Could be a lot of things they’ve lost over time.
Just when I think I’ve heard the story about the worlds biggest dumb@ss, some beach bum proves me wrong.
that was my first thought...why would you pick up any ordnance????
“I wonder what this little round thingie here in the middle is... “
and we made a call of a suspicious device at a local quick stop slash liquor store. We arrived and I unfortunately
walked into the store first and the middle eastern clerk handed me two pipe bombs with fuses on the ends and both had burned all the way down to the end cap.
He just jammed them into my hands and I went "oh F**k!" and turned and walked out side and set them down the whole time ready to puke.
Some guy who was mad at them had thrown them on the roof of the store . The bomb guys took them in a trailer mounted container to dispose of them.
He called late to tell us they remotely lit them again to see what would happen and both relit and exploded.
always a bad sign....
I'm sure the Lifeguard really, really appreciated that 'delivery'... 'Hey, lookee here what I found...'
--empty cardboard RPG case--I wonder?
That made me cringe - picking up an unexploded shell/bomb/hand grenade/SOMETHING THAT BLOWS UP. The picker-upper needs to be put in a rubber room for being that dumb/stupid/crazy.
Yes, Joker the Boston bomber was employed as a lifeguard briefly before he was canned for not showing up for work. If someone had taken such a device to him, he would surely know what to do with it.
Or the guy at the radiation safety talk who took the radium dial watch off his wrist and put in his pocket.
Prolly a horseshoe crab.
Some peole don’t. And now he’ll probably sue the military for not putting a warning label on it. /s
