Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said Wednesday that he would support a new ban on assault weapons as an amendment to pending gun control legislation.
""I will vote for Dianne Feinstein's assault weapons ban," Reid said in an impassioned speech on the Senate floor.
"I will vote for assault weapons ban because maintaining law and order and saving lives is more important than preventing imagined tyranny."
"Today I choose to vote my conscience, not only as Harry Reid, a United States Senator, but also as a husband, a father, a grandfather, and — I hope — a friend to lots and lots of people," Reid concluded.
Reid's support for a new assault weapons ban marks a final break between the Nevada Democrat and the National Rifle Association, with whom he has previously enjoyed a relatively warm relationship.
Until recently, Reid's campaign website even featured an endorsement from NRA CEO Wayne LaPierre that expressly praised Reid for opposing a new assault weapons ban.

But tops on the list is the Manchin/Toomey “Background Check” (National Gun Registration Bill).
The vote on this so-called “compromise bill” could come down to just one or two votes.

Many or my colleagues are getting pressure from all different directions.
Anti-gun groups are running hard-hitting TV ads. The Obama White House is working to twist arms, as well.

My, my -- how these Demoncraps have changed!!!
The Bill of Rights is about our rights as citizens, not about public safety. If public safety were the only criteria would not it be more effective to abuse the Fifth Amendment by eliminating the Miranda rule than to abuse the Second amendment by enacting strict gun control? I don’t advocate either, but I have not seen anyone demonstrate how any crime would have been prevented by the propose gun control legislation yet there are clear instances where obviously guilty individuals have been released under the Miranda rule.
