Brad Paisley Calls ‘Accidental Racist’ One Of His ‘Proudest Moments As A Songwriter’

Brad Paisley’s new album Wheelhouse isn’t even in stores yet (it’s set for release tomorrow), but already one of the songs is causing controversy for its lyrics that attempt to address racial tensions in the South.

Called “Accidental Racist,” the song appears aimed at helping to bridge misunderstandings. The song starts out with a guy apologizing for the Confederate flag on his T-shirt to a a worker he encountered at the local Starbucks. As his protagonist sings, “when I put on that T-shirt, the only thing I meant to say, is I’m a Skynyrd fan.”

“I’m proud of where I’m from,” the chorus goes, “but not everything we’ve done.” And his protagonist does admit that he’s “got a lot to learn,” and ultimately, “I just want to make things right.”

Paisley will have a song about being a homosexual soon. Mark my words. The a&&hole needs to be Dixie Chick’d, but I never buy his crap anyway.

Today’s “country” is nothing more than what we called in the 70s, “Soft Rock.”

The song starts out with a guy apologizing for the Confederate flag on his T-shirt to a a worker he encountered at the local Starbucks.

And any Skynrd fan, provided you would find on in a Starbucks, would respond, "I'm paying you to make me some coffee, I don't give a damn what you think about my t-shirt."

By the way, I heard the song and its horrible.

You're being nice. The song sucks waffles. It's so bad that it will probably be
nominated for a Grammy in the liberal white guilt category.

“It’s a real shame that the liberals were allowed to infiltrate into country music.”

You can blame Johnny Cash and Willie Nelson for infiltrating the country music.

The song really does suck. Some white guy worried sick about offending some Urban type by wearing a Skynerd T-shirt. And then it turns into some assaholic lecture.
Not even a tip of the hat in the song about how the white guy might have noticed the other side has 8 times his homicide rate. Or why he is careful not to go to the zoo on free day, or why he makes sure not to visit Miami during urban beach week, or wouldn’t dare drive down some streets in Philly,, etc.

The song was very one sided, and so, accomplishes little. If the LL Cool J parts at the end included some serious apologies too for the very real ways that culture has made the world worse, then yeah.
But even musically, it’s not something anyone would play loud in the truck. Not sure who the target of this song was. Sounds like just an excuse to do a duet with a rapper.

I can’t wait for The Ballad of Trayvon Martin next! Maybe the Next Dylan Bruce Springstein will do it. Or the Next Dylan Johnny Cougar.

1. The song sucks.
2. He falls for the I’m offended BS
3. Sounds like an apology for being white.
4. Brad drops a couple of notches in my book.

Brad Paisley is nothing but a liberal wuss, dime-store cowboy. Types like him will kill the current form of country music, just like the syrupy ballad killed metal.

F him and everything he stands for!

I can’t wait for The Ballad of Trayvon Martin next!

I thought Elton John already wrote it: (Note: I found this on the Net, I cannot claim authorship)

Trayvon wears his gold grill like a crown,
Call his child Skittles, cause he likes the name,
Suspended from the finest school in town.

Trayvon, Trayvon like his money,
makes alot they say.
Spends his days dealing, by the playground way.

He was born a bastard to a ho,
6 weeks past Christmas day.
When the New Tork Times says Clintons great,
Tracy Martin had a son today.

And he shall be Trayvon,
And he shall be a hood man.
And he shall be Trayvon,
in tradition with the family plan.
And he shall be Trayvon,
And he shall be a hood man.
......he shall be Trayvon.

Trayvon, steals womens jewelry all day,
His family business thrives.
Skittles blows up balloons all day,
Sits on the porch watching them fly.

And Skittles, wants to go to Venus,
and leave Trayvon far behind.
Take a balloon and go sailing,
while Trayvon, Trayvon slowly dies.

And he shall be Trayvon,
And he shall be a hood man.
And he shall be Trayvon,
in tradition with the family plan.
And he shall be Trayvon,
And he shall be a hood man.
......heeee shaaaall beeee TraaaaayyyyVVVVVVooooooonn.

I just listened to Accidental Racist as I followed the lyrics. It may be a white guilt trip, but is sure ain't country/western. If you've forgotten what CW sounds like, listen to the following tunes. Brad Paisley couldn't hold a candle to any of them.

Dear Mr. White Man, I wish you understood
What the world is really like when you're livin' in the hood.
Just because my pants are saggin' doesn't mean I'm up to no good.
You should try to get to know me, I really wish you would
Now my chains are gold but I'm still misunderstood.

--from "Accidental Racist"

Sagging pants and gold chains are gang attire. If you don't want others to misunderstand you and think that you're up to no good, don't dress that way.
