National Security: The administration moves an advanced missile defense system to Guam because it knows a single low-yield nuke detonated at high altitude could send America back in time a hundred years.
The announcement Wednesday by the Defense Department that it would soon deploy the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense System (THAAD), a missile defense system inherited from the Bush administration, to Guam underscores the seriousness of the threat from North Korea, whose actions, Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel rightly said, "present a real and clear danger."
This move comes after the Obama administration reversed its previous scuttling of Bush administration plans to increase our ground-based interceptor force in Alaska and the deployment of two destroyers equipped with Aegis missile defense systems, the Decatur and the John McCain, to the region.
Some observers dismissed it as familiar bluster when North Korea's 28-year-old raging runt, Kim Jong-un, signed an order for North Korea's strategic rocket forces to be on standby to fire at U.S. targets in front of a map that included Austin, Texas, as a target.
But other observers are concerned that a specific target may not be what the possibly imploding North Korean regime may have in mind.
The three-stage missile North Korea launched last December that also orbited a "package," which experts say could be a test to orbit a nuclear weapon that then would be de-orbited on command anywhere over the U.S. and exploded at a high altitude, releasing an electromagnetic pulse (EMP). That would fry electronic circuitry and the nation's power grid.

Absolutely correct. If they just hit a city or two that would be far preferable to an EMP which would be completely devastating.
“Everyone should read One Second After.’
After I read the book I talked to some physicists at work (real physicists who work on DARPA and defense projects not physics teachers). Their opinion was that the threat of EMP is greatly exaggerated and it would take a massive attack to completely blackout the US.
“They already HAVE put 4 different packages in orbit.”
From my understanding only one of the four is a “satellite” or whatever it is. One is part of the rocket and the other two are much smaller and likely part of the process of detaching the satellite from the vehicle.

Ha! I get why that was aimed at me but in the case of an EMP strike money would be completely irrelevant.
Yup, exactly. The scaremongers need to cut back on the espresso.
Do you remember Katrina? I do. All the MSM preached about was the ninth ward. I lived through it in South Mississippi. You didn’t hear much from us. Because most of us were without power for 6 weeks or longer. That includes cell phone coverage where I was as well.
We were too busy trying to get clean water (boil water notice is a joke when you have no electricity. unless you have a wood cookstove, firewood and access to reasonably unpolluted surface water), food (grocery stores were empty for weeks down here) and access to medical care (difficult when there’s giant trees down on your main road. For mile after mile after mile).
We dug out and recovered, eventually, because the rest of the country (thanks y’all!) came to our assistance.
How, exactly, do you propose to keep 300 million people provided with clean water, or even clean food in any sort of timely manner.
Cities would burn to the ground. You just think the ‘youth mobs’ are dangerous now. Wait till there haven’t been any food deliveries to their hoods.
How could utilities be up again quickly when the transformers that would be destroyed are largely made in China? At the very least it would be months before any power started coming back on line. What would YOU do to obtain clean water, food, and heat your home in that time. Not to mention simple sanitation. How long do you think your city sewer would work without a functioning sanitation plant?
Or maybe even 50-100 MT.
We know the DOD has contingency plans for every possible scenario any place in the world and updates them periodically.
If NK targets anything US, island, continental, ship, etc. will be sufficient provocation to do surgical strikes on NK destroying all missile sites and selected military targets. That will effectively end NK as a threat in the foreseeable future. Certainly the DOD has such a plan on the books, but it requires POTUS approval to initiate.
Now, it will leave a huge humanitarian problem. If we had a conservative in the WH, we would have a chance to cause a revolution to rise up, and with he SK operatives working the area, remove the communist government and install one friendly to SK, and by extension the US, and eventually lead to a unified peninsula. Both China and Russia will work against this plan. But with smart US leadership, it could happen.
OOPs!! sorry ‘bout that. I am not sure the US possesses “smart” leadership in the WH, Congress or in the Pentagon. Like I said - just a thought.
Austin is full of Obama voters, so THAT struck a nerve!
I pray that they are right. If not we would be totally screwed...
“could send America back in time a hundred years.”
Sounds good to me.
“Utilities would be up again quickly”
Actually, I don’t think so. Reasons:
1. Government moves slow. They are still cleaning up in New Jersey from that hurricane.
2. The means of production themselves would be taken out. You can’t replace Part X if Part Machine Y is also broken. And every component has to be made by another machine, all broken. And you have to have electricity to run the machines, even if they aren’t.
3. Most transportation would be gone. Say goodbye to any vehicle after about 1980 or so.
Most of the people who think about this stuff say it would be a total disaster, and perhaps take a decade to reach even some semblance of normality.
Pray it doesn’t happen.
4/9 22:26 pass would do the job nicely.
It wouldn’t have to completely black out the entire country. Just 25% would be enough. What would be the outcome if SoCal were blacked out? What about the NE?
If 60 million people in a region suddenly lost ALL power, it would be catastrophic for the country. Most of the transformers that would be destroyed are made in China. What if they simply refused to sell them to us?
Imagine if the blackout in the NE in 03 had lasted for 6 months.
Tell me oh wise one, why does it take weeks and even months to get the electricity back up after something as localized, relatively speaking, as a hurricane?
“could send America back in time a hundred years.
Sounds good to me.”
Question: Do you own a horse?
