After a week of legal twists and turns, James Holmes learned Monday that he will face execution if convicted in the Colorado theater attack that killed 12 people.
George Brauchler, a prosecutor in the case, told the court that his office decided on seeking the death penalty after consulting 800 victims and family members. He said he spoke to 60 victims himself.

Such a waste. Why go to the expense of a trial when clearly he is GUILTY. He & the Ft Hood murderer should just be
sentenced immediately.

They will ban the death penalty, release felons early or with no time served but they will make innocent firearms owners guilty by fiat and throw the book at the law abiding citizen, yet reward lawbreakers with drivers licenses....
This state is starting to suck more and more and I am starting to feel sorry i moved here...
He had to talk to 800 people to decide on the death penalty?
Why execute this poor man. According to the Colorado Government it was the guns and magazines that bear the responsibility.
He should already be dead and buried in a paupers grave with no name on the tomb stone!
Rather, he will achieve celebrity status with a 'life' sentence in an enlightened 'prison'.
I expect to see this &#*@&!! poor misunderstood product of the system interviewed by Barbara Walters or Oprah in a few years. By then the masses will have been indoctrinated to believe it is Bush's fault.
... and in-state tuition. Oh wait, they already did that one.
Even if Holmes is convicted of capital murder, it will likely be decades of appeals before any justice will be done. The death penalty would be more meaningful if after reasonable appeals it could be actually carried out. With our current system his execution in say 2030 wouldn’t have much impact as the horrendous crime he committed will have been long forgotten.

James Holmes will never be executed. I wish the prosecution had accepted the plea offer.
If I was the victims’ families, I don’t want to wait til I grow old and die to see justice done.
I agree - I’m pro death penalty.
But if it means waiting twenty years to execute a murderer, I prefer life imprisonment.
For me, the finality of punishment is more important than a politician’s need to look tough to the voters.
Yup. That’s exactly why George Brauchler is doing the victims’ families a disservice.
It takes decades to execute a murderer - and they can die well before their execution date any way of natural causes.
He’s just inflicting more pain and uncertainty on people who need it least.
I’d have told him as long as Holmes never gets out of prison, its good enough for me.
The SOB did it to secure his re-election. DAs first and foremost are political animals.
Maybe he wants to run for Attorney General or even Governor one day.
He shouldn’t stand there before the news cameras and tell us that political considerations had nothing to do with his decision to seek the death penalty.
They can “seek” whatever........but I’d bet anyone here, the guy will never be executed.
Yes part of the parasite class (government employees) although one might have an argument that they actually do something useful.
