CHICAGO Mexican drug cartels whose operatives once rarely ventured beyond the U.S. border are dispatching some of their most trusted agents to live and work deep inside the United States an emboldened presence that experts believe is meant to tighten their grip on the world's most lucrative narcotics market and maximize profits.
If left unchecked, authorities say, the cartels' move into the American interior could render the syndicates harder than ever to dislodge and pave the way for them to expand into other criminal enterprises such as prostitution, kidnapping-and-extortion rackets and money laundering.
Cartel activity in the U.S. is certainly not new. Starting in the 1990s, the ruthless syndicates became the nation's No. 1 supplier of illegal drugs, using unaffiliated middlemen to smuggle cocaine, marijuana and heroin beyond the border or even to grow pot here.
But a wide-ranging Associated Press review of federal court cases and government drug-enforcement data, plus interviews with many top law enforcement officials, indicate the groups have begun deploying agents from their inner circles to the U.S. Cartel operatives are suspected of running drug-distribution networks in at least nine non-border states, often in middle-class suburbs in the Midwest, South and Northeast.
"It's probably the most serious threat the United States has faced from organized crime," said Jack Riley, head of the Drug Enforcement Administration's Chicago office.

Didn’t UPS just pay 40 million fine for not checking it’s cargo?.
Feds wink slap wrist.
Its time to try the alternative - personal responsibility. Get government out of the prohibition business.
legalize murder and rape and they will go away
/sarcasm
False parallel - nobody says that under legalization drug use will go away ... what will go away is the hyperinflating of drug profits and channeling of those profits into crimininal hands.
But they will get the white guys for it.
No need to register. The get their guns from the ATF.
That's a good one. If you are going to rely on "personal responsibility" then you HAVE to end the welfare state first.
No you don't - even under our far-too-expansive welfare system there's a cost to being an alcoholic and would be a cost to being a legal drug addict.
What part of PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY don’t you understand? No one else is OBLIGATED to pay for “YOUR” personal responsibility, whether that is to buying food for your children or paying your rent and gas bill.
Drugs are just something that can make it even harder to meet your economic responsibilities when you choose to leech off The State (and taxpayers) to fund a drug habit.
Don’t use the “personal responsibility” meme without extending that to government’s day to day operations.
Dont use the personal responsibility meme without extending that to governments day to day operations.
Which part of "far-too-expansive" dont you understand? I'm all for ending welfare - but not for using that as an excuse for continuing to enrich criminals with the War on Drugs.
Your health care is now in the hands of the same government that has been fighting the War on Drugs for these 40+ years.
Yes, and how anyone can recognize the government's inability to manage health care and yet believe that the same government can win the "war" on economics and human nature that it's been losing for 40+ years is beyond me.
Can’t smoke tobacco without breaking a bunch of rules (selling to minors, smuggling them in from Indian reservations, salvaging them from flooded warehouses, smoking indoors, smoking in a car, smoking in the presence of children, smoking at home if your employer prohibits it).
With few exceptions (such as Vegas and New Orleans) can’t buy liquor every day at the store. Can’t buy beer at the store except in restricted house. Can’t buy it at a bar 24-7. Can’t buy it if you are underage. Can’t distill spirits on your own. A beer missing from a six-pack is an “open container” if you leave the other 5 beers in the box or plastic rings. Can be busted in public for “public intoxication” if you purchase and consume more than 2 adult beverages in an hour...
The list goes on and on.
The ship has sailed.
And PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY means providing for yourself and suffering the consequences of your actions. NO welfare state if that is the case. Attempting the end the welfare state AFTER the drug door is opened will never happen. Can’t even drug test the recipients now.

Which ship is that? I support regulation of legalized-for-adults drugs - and the regulations you cite have not enriched criminals to anywhere near the degree the War on Drugs has.
Attempting the end the welfare state AFTER the drug door is opened will never happen.
The ship has sailed: the drug door opened when Prohibition ended.
Mexican drug cartels are coming to America . . . it’s funny ‘cuz the headline is so earnest . . . like aren’t they already entrenched here?
Ummm, Prohibition was at least Constitutionally passed both times.
I’m continually astounded that on a site such as FR, there are still those that give Fedzilla a pass (not saying you).
#1 should ALWAYS be, does it fit with A1S8 powers? But, no. Most of the time it’s “Does it gore MY ox?” or “Does it make ME sleep better at night?”
Sad
It created more rich politicians and bankers than id did crooks.
You want to stop the criminals, first remove them from office. There has never been a war on drugs, it is just what they call the plan to redistribute our wealth minus the fees collected by the Banks and the crooked politicians.
No, no, no, it was white NAZIs. </sarcasm>

And replace them with incorruptible politicians? Thanks for confirming that stopping drugs through government action is a utopian fantasy.
“Mexican drug cartels whose operatives once rarely ventured beyond the U.S. border “
Once? Like decades ago maybe! Armed cartels have been running illegal aliens to farm our public lands for decades. Here in So. Oregon we have so many gang bangers they’ve lost track. raybbr, you and I both knew 10 years ago that this was going to happen. I’m convinced the cartels and/or Carlos Slim has bought and paid for our politicians.
[It appears they're already here.]
Again, How many times must I ask you to take me off your ping list?? Do I need to involve the moderator?
Oh, eastforker, I am sorry, and finally found the problem. You were on the list in two different places and I just hadn’t noticed.
