CHICAGO Mexican drug cartels whose operatives once rarely ventured beyond the U.S. border are dispatching some of their most trusted agents to live and work deep inside the United States an emboldened presence that experts believe is meant to tighten their grip on the world's most lucrative narcotics market and maximize profits.
If left unchecked, authorities say, the cartels' move into the American interior could render the syndicates harder than ever to dislodge and pave the way for them to expand into other criminal enterprises such as prostitution, kidnapping-and-extortion rackets and money laundering.
Cartel activity in the U.S. is certainly not new. Starting in the 1990s, the ruthless syndicates became the nation's No. 1 supplier of illegal drugs, using unaffiliated middlemen to smuggle cocaine, marijuana and heroin beyond the border or even to grow pot here.
But a wide-ranging Associated Press review of federal court cases and government drug-enforcement data, plus interviews with many top law enforcement officials, indicate the groups have begun deploying agents from their inner circles to the U.S. Cartel operatives are suspected of running drug-distribution networks in at least nine non-border states, often in middle-class suburbs in the Midwest, South and Northeast.
"It's probably the most serious threat the United States has faced from organized crime," said Jack Riley, head of the Drug Enforcement Administration's Chicago office.

Hussein wants his cut of the action.
legalize murder and rape and they will go away
/sarcasm
But still Napolitano says we are safe, and Obama wants more and more Mexicans in this country.
I know they are right because they are liberal elites.
Theyw ant us to give up our guns so we will be at the Mercy of the benevelent Cartels.
The War on Drugs has been going on for 42 years. The longest war in the history of the United States.
Why can't it be won?
Corruption.
Really, you got a source for that?
"WHAT DIFFERENCE DOES IT MAKE?"
Obamanation Counterculture File.
That's a good one. If you are going to rely on "personal responsibility" then you HAVE to end the welfare state first. ZERO payments to anyone.
Exactly. California elects every liberal running for office, but they don’t legalize marijuana? Only because illegal drug money runs the Democrat party. They aren’t going to give up that money.
We’ll need to make alcohol illegal again until the welfare state is dismantled. It’s the number one drug of choice, after all.
Maybe not.
Good luck with that.
Coming, my a**. They're here, walking the streets among us as part of the huge illegal immigrant population and protected by claims of racism if even questioned.
In addition, members of DOJ, HS, ICE, Congress and myriad state and local officials are on their payroll.
The joining of forces by the two political crime syndicates (Democrats & Republicans) and the Mexican drug cartels is a marriage made in heaven.
Those that can't be bought off will be intimidated into silence or inaction!!! A few car bombs, murders of family members (wives & kids) will have even the bravest toeing the line.
Legalize it. Problem solved.
Chicago. Go figure.
Why can't it be won?
Corruption.
What enables corruption? Big money. What does the War on Drugs put in criminal hands? Big money. The War on Drugs inescapably contains the seeds of its own failure - as did Prohibition before it.
Its time to try the alternative - personal responsibility. Get government out of the prohibition business.
Yep I agree. But, at this point legalization will not work because the Cartels wont give up the monopoly
Rumrunners didn't willingly give up their monopoly - it was taken from them by the free market, a more powerful force than any government (at least, any government that this Land of the Free should tolerate).
