BRUNSWICK, Ga. - The mother and sister of a 17-year-old accused of killing a 1-year-old boy last week were not granted bond at their first appearances in court Friday afternoon.
Karimah and Sabrina Elkins, 36 and 19 respectively, are charged with trying to dispose of the gun investigators believe De'Marquise Elkins (pictured below on right) used to kill 13-month-old Antonio Santiago. Police said the women disposed of the gun in a saltwater pond about two miles away from the killing.
The judge said no bond was granted because of their past history, and they will have to wait for a full bond hearing. The decision prompted Sabrina Elkins to come to tears.
Investigators said De'Marquise Elkins shot the child in the face while trying to rob his mother as she pushed the boy in a stroller.
Dominique Lang, 15, is also charged with murder in the killing.
Karimah Elkins and Katrina Elkins were arrested earlier this week on charges of lying to police. Investigators said they created false alibis for De'Marquise Elkins at the time of the shooting.
While none of the Elkins' family members went to see their relatives in court Friday, the New Black Panther Party spoke out on behalf the family and the teens accused of murder.
"We didn't come for five minutes of fame. We came because we understand that these are children, these are juveniles here, and they deserve the same rights," James Muhammad said.
He said Sabrina Elkins should have been granted bond.
"Sabrina's not a flight risk. She's not a flight risk. So why hold her in jail in court," Muhammad said.
As the investigation entered its eighth day, investigators said they were working to find evidence and witnesses.

When a spin meister says they're not doing something then you know that is what they are doing.
And then there is the Elkin’s crime family’s Uncle Jim aka Uncle Commish:
According to the Camden County Grand Jury Indictment released Friday, Brooks [Uncle Commish] unlawfully took $500 from Mungin in an alleged racketeering scheme. Mungin said he didn’t think he was doing anything wrong since he was dealing with a city official.
This is one of those cases that makes me wish that a fiery crack would just open up in the ground under these folks and take them all straight to Hell.
‘Killin’ white babies . Isn’t that the nbb theme song lately?
ping
And what rights are those? The same rights as the 13 month old child that was killed in cold blood?
The absolute worst kind of garbage is festering in inner city ghettos.
Why should they not be released on bail.
Oh, let’s think about this.
They adided and abetted a First Degree Murder of an innocent baby done in the commision of a felony armed robbery where the mother was also shot.
They lied to police, created a false alibi and actively disposed of the murder weapon.
This was a particularly heinous crime with multiple special circumstances that increase the severity of the crime.
I can understand the New Black Panther’s line of reasoning, because this is really just norma, business as usual l day to day life where he comes from.
God help us now that these feral animals are being turned loose on society.
And may God have mercy on their souls if our society pulls together the will and courage to resist.
Oh, and by the way - it was the New Black Panthers who have been publicly advocating the murdering of white babies by New Black Panthers.
Hmmmm...looks like a mob crime family. Perhaps the teenage boy was just an “enforcer”?
If just once, one time, some “official” black group would stand up and, instead of attacking the justice system and the victim, call upon black people to examine what in black society was making black teenagers feel it was ok to blow away a baby because his mother (who seems to have been poor herself) didn’t have enough money to hand over when she was being robbed...I would be so happy. Instead, all the black groups do is go out and defend these savages the left wing black welfare culture has created.
I think they need a come to Jesus moment. Literally. Their hearts need to be converted and turned from stone to human hearts.
The newspapers and TV news outlets in the area have carried coverage of this, but in conversations with friends in Seattle and Los Angeles, I discovered that they had never heard of it.
What the journalists fear is a hardening of white opinion on the American race question. Liberal white Southerners in particular remember the history of this region and what can happen if white folks get riled up enough.
Had this incident happened as recently at the 1920s, the fathers of the town would have put on their sheets and pointy hats and marched down to the county jail by torchlight. The police chief would have been a member of the Klan, or he would have known not to challenge the crowd's anger. Either way, the two miscreants would have been dragged down to an old live oak or bridge, and they would have been lynched. Once dead, their bodies would have been set on fire.
With that job finished, the fathers of the town would have surrounded the Brunswick ghetto, sealed it off and burned it to the ground in an action reminiscent of Tulsa (1921) or Rosewood, Florida (1923). The inhabitants would have been killed or scattered to the winds.
Today the police chief would mobilize a collection of state and federal authorities who would prevent anything like this from happening, to include the use of troops. Were it to happen, it would set off racial insurrections in most of the country's major cities.
There is ancestral memory at work here, which is why the Mainstream Media is trying to tamp this one down.
No, these are NOT children. A 17 year old knows that killing is a crime (right & wrong, being moral judgements, don't come into play for sociopaths such as these).
The question I would pose to Mr Muhammad is this: Suppose all the variables remained the same, EXCEPT the races were reversed for all individuals involved? Would he make the exact same statement? Would he still fight for the rights of the "children"?
& The round,
When he gets home from the golf course, someone ask Barry his opinion on this.
