DAVIE, Fla. -- A student at Florida Atlantic University's campus in Davie says he couldn't believe what he and his fellow students were asked to do by their instructor three weeks ago.
Ryan Rotela, a junior from Coral Springs at FAU, said what happened was an insult to his intelligence.
He said the instructor in his Intercultural Communications class at FAU told everyone in the class to take out a piece of paper, write the word JESUS on it in bold letters, and then put the paper on the floor and stomp on it.
Ryan said while some of his classmates did it, he did not. He told the instructor, Dr. Deandre Poole, that he was offended by what he wanted him to do.
"Anytime you stomp on something it shows that you believe that something has no value. So if you were to stomp on the word Jesus, it says that the word has no value," said Ryan.
Ryan said he's a Mormon, goes to church every Sunday and considers himself a very religious person.
He said two days later, he went to Dr. Poole's supervisor, an associate professor at FAU to discuss his concerns. Ryan said since the incident, he has been suspended from the class.
FAU sent us a response by e-mail, saying, "Faculty and students at academic institutions pursue knowledge and engage in open discourse. While at times the topics discussed may be sensitive, a university environment is a venue for such dialogue and debate."
FAU says the instructor was doing a classroom exercise from a textbook entitled "Intercultural Communication: A Contextual Approach, 5th Edition."
The school would not say if the teachers would face disciplinary action.
Anytime you stomp on something it shows that you believe that something has no value. So if you were to stomp on the word *PROGRESSIVE*, it says that the word has no value.
Edited for truth.
Next week we stomp on a picture of Mohammad. Let’s see how that works out.
Sue.
Why was he really suspended?
How many people go to college and do not complete an assignment, then are suspended?
This was an assignment, and he chose not to complete it, that does not warrant suspension, so again why was he really suspended?
He was suspended for his religious beliefs.
Is the lamestream media just realizing they need to report this?
I thing the internet made the story impossible to ignore- everyone was talking about it DESPITE no news coverage.
they are just at the back of the parade yelling “follow me”
There is a world of difference between teaching a student HOW to think and WHAT to think.
Or the word ‘Obama.’
This has already been resolved. Student NOT suspended or charged. Profuse apologies from the school, which will not allow this “lesson” to be taught ever again. Student is finishing the course with a different prof. Only bummer, the un-tenured prof still working.
IT’S OVER, according to a thread here earlier today.
I believe that this is “old news,” because the university has now apologized to the student for it’s actions.

How do conclude that?
He is a self professed mormon, and he was suspended for not completing an assingment.
There are dozens of self professed Christians, who do not complete assignments that are not suspended.
So why was he really suspended?
Meh - Obama? He’s nothing now. Even the Liberal press seems to be turning on him. All he can do now is go on vacations.
“Intercultural Communications”, a disguised name for multiculturalism, which is a desguised name for anti-Judeo-Christianism. They’re getting bolder by actually requiring the students to take part in blasphemy
Hmmm... seems to me there will be a movement that requires that you renounce Jesus or you won’t be able to participate in society.
The Fat Lady’s warming up, folks.
. . . and where might the ACLU be while all this is occurring?
This story is five days old (look at the date).
It is now outdated, as the University has relented under pressure and “un-suspended” the student.
Don’t know why the OP dredged it up, and posted two versions of the same old story in a row.

Sounds like he was suspended for being a jack a$$
I don’t know how you reached that conclusion from the article you posted.
