Economist and conservative author Thomas Sowell tells Newsmax TV that Republicans have a decades-long record of reaching out to the black vote in the most unpromising way possible.
And based on the partys strategy moving forward, he says, not much has changed.
Im baffled by so many things that the Republican Party does nationally, Sowell tells Newsmax on Friday in an exclusive interview.
Sowell, a senior fellow at the Hoover Institution at Stanford University, tells Newsmax the GOPs current plan to woo minorities is the same misguided strategy employed decades ago by former President Ronald Reagan.
When [Reagan] set out to win the black vote, he went to the Urban League, Sowell said. He was going to these black establishments as his entrée into the black public, as if the establishment owned the rest of the black people.
Now, Sowell says, in plans unveiled recently by Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus, theyre talking about going to the NAACP, which is the next thing to a fully-owned subsidiary of the Democratic Party and thats how theyre going to try to reach blacks.
All theyre doing is increasing the sense that those are the blacks who matter and that they are the entryway for the rest of the black people, he says.
Sowell, 82, whose new book is Intellectuals and Race, notes how Priebus discussed reaching out to African Americans in Detroit to woo them to the GOP. You seriously think thats where youre going to find Republican voters or blacks who are conservative?
Sowell says while Republicans are wavering and moaning and gnashing our teeth about the failures of national GOP candidates, Republicans out in the Midwest and in other parts of the country have won a majority of the governors chairs.

Look on the bright side. At least the RNC is not talking about going to the CBC to win the black vote.
Outreach is an individual thing and we all need to find a way to pull down the fence because the plantation is growing and encompassing an ever larger cross section of America.
The GOP wants big government. They want lots of money to play with, so that highly paid professional government experts can keep doing what they've been doing (ex. Rove). Having Democrats in charge provides perfect cover for Republican experts to keep riding the gravy train. Life would be a lot harder if the Republicans actually had to demonstrate some kind of success. They want to fail.
It's better to focus on getting the NET TAXPAYER vote, and not worry about what color your voters come in.
You need to target a certain segment of blacks, middle class black families, that’s the vote the GOP needs to go after, the inner-city population, you can pretty much forget.
Project 21; a group of intelligent, articulate black conservatives not afraid to speak out to other blacks about the evils of liberalism....these brave, patriotic Americans would push the GOP over the top...
then again most of them believe in Tea Party principles so its not wonder they’ve been shunned by the GOPe...
While I’m sure you’re proud of yourself, your tireless promotion of your little paperback is getting tiresome, whether we as a group agree with it or not.
If you want to drum up sales for yourself maybe you should’ve set up a booth at CPAC. Or, if “free” is the magic word in Free Republic, maybe a Wordpress blog is in order. There’s even a little income to be had from Google ads with those, or so I understand.
The problem is that much of the black middle class works for the government. That is why black support for Democrats is pretty solid across all income levels.
I read the headline and thought I was going to disagree with Dr. Sowell, but then reading the article, once again I am impressed with his clarity of thought. You cannot reach out to black people by going to their race pimps and slave masters. You have to go directly to them. It makes too much sense to be a strategy the GOP will follow.
The Republicans need to simply take the moral high ground WITH OUT BEING EMBARRASSED.
1. Point out gay marriage is wrong.
2. Be the party of God.
3. State unequivocally that abortion is wrong.
4. Clearly describe why big government is destroying the middle class.
5. Above all, MOCK OBAMA’S INABILITY TO STOP SPENDING ON HIMSELF.
The GOP establishment is one half the establishment, and the establishment is not failing at anything. They’re steering America precisely in the direction they want to go.
Politics is just a spectator sport to keep the masses engaged and distracted and feeling as though the government is not in fact run by the establishment, which is hidden in plain sight.
Well said...I’ve read some of his views on this in previous articles and pretty much knew what was coming.
Using AF to get into college hurts qualified young Americans and it also hurts the unqualified [ who can not do the math, etc. / have terrible SAT’s ] with the prefered skin color as they promptly flunk out.
However the teacher Unions and Universities like getting the cash.
GREAT IDEA. Why didn't I think of that. Oh, wait.......
Blacks voted for BO 96%
Ninety six percent.
All due respect to Dr. Sowell, but that is not fixable. It is not a problem of the Republicans, as dufus prone as they are.
“tireless promotion”?
I haven’t seen that, and I would if it was true.
In any event, all C. Edmund Wright did was bump the thread with a picture of his book cover. Big deal. I hope he does sell more books and makes enough to contribute generously to Free Republic. What do you have a bug up your behind about?
I think that’s true of some, but I think that actual cluelesness, as a result of isolation from reality, is true of even more of them....but the net result is the same.
