Earlier this week at the PyCon conference (the largest annual gathering for developers using the open-source Python programming language) a woman named Adria Richards overheard a joke between two men sitting behind her during a crowded presentation.
Richards was offended and took a picture of the two men who were making jokes. She tweeted, "Not cool. Jokes about forking repo's in a sexual way and "big" dongles. Right behind me #pycon." She also attached a photo of the two people making the jokes.

She needs to learn the lingo.........
I said nothing!
Perfect.
“Hardware keys” is another word, but ‘dongle’ is so much more illustrative.........
Call me crazy but I say, be careful who you take pics of & make accusations about. BTW this just gives many another reason to not hire women.
When you are in the business of being a spokeswoman with 10,000 twitter followers, you should be careful about whose privacy you violate.
It’s also a shame these boys couldn’t show some respect around a woman. I really dont’ think there’s an argument over how bad their joke was/was not. Minimally, they were on company time and as such were the face/voice of their company. Don’t know if I’d fire them, but I’d give them hell.
What happened to “gentlemen (and ladies) do not listen in on other gentlemen’s conversations”?
privacy?
a roomful of people in a public venue is now “private”?
Or - I can fight in combat. But I need special protection from the Government if a man yells at me.
they probably didn’t give those around them much choiuce, doing their Beavis and Butthead routine
Kind of obvious she hasn’t had a dongle for a while.
Good thing shes doenst work around BT Plugs. .
Looking at the picture she might have been the only woman in the room. And these guys had the bad luck to sit near her.
Truth in advertizing would be //butyoureasissy.com...
Take a look at that picture. How many women do you see? It’s a male field. She should know when she participates in a male dominated field that there is, and always will be, a certain amount of potty humor. It’s a Y chromosome thing. Y’all can’t help it sometimes. Love y’all, warts and all.
When I worked high tech I told coworkers I didn’t care, as long as it didn’t get creepy and personal about me or someone else we worked with. Out of ear shot I couldn’t care less.
And I would NEVER have invoked job karma for such a thing. Bad mojo with that.
And this Adria chick is either a complete puritan or new to the tech field because the dongle jokes have been around since dongles were invented. Perhaps her real problem is with ‘dongles’. If the perps discussion had been loud enough to be distracting I might have turned around and asked them to talk about their dongles later.
FWIW the most completely disgusting sexual banter wasn’t when I worked in the all male field. It was when I worked in a completely female office environment. O. M. G. The guys I worked with would have had to take lessons on gross and insulting personal discussions from the sweetest looking little 30 something former sorority chicks.
Her face looks like she has a BT Plug.
Many, many years ago, a secretary in our engineering department went to HR. She was very upset over a conversation she overheard between a couple of Unix programmers. They were discussing ‘killing children’ and ‘flushing’ things down ‘pipes’. She was assured that these were technical terms and that kids weren’t being murdered. Even after that, she always seemed a bit uncomfortable around us.
Sure, but she has no right to expect the prevailing culture to bend to accommodate her sensitivities. Like I said, when in Rome.
