On the Long Island Expressway, Cold, Hungry and Stranded

FARMINGVILLE, N.Y. — Lorna Jones decided to brave the blizzard on Friday, venturing onto the Long Island Expressway as the snow began piling up. So did many others here in Suffolk County.

They all came to regret it.

“It’s terrible. It’s cold. I don’t know how long I’m going to be here,” said Ms. Jones, 62, a nurse who stalled near the town of Brookhaven, less than a mile from her destination. “Are there any plans to help us?”

She said she had slept fitfully in her car, with no food or water, and only a bottle of Listerine next to her on the passenger seat.

How many interviews of Freepers would actually make it to the pages of the New York Times?

I’m in Huntington....very close to the border of Nassau, but on the North Shore. I went to lunch, to complete the rest of my errands and it was hailing mix. By the time I got through with lunch, 1 hour, it was blizzard. This was about 1:30 pm.

Although it started snowing before hand, it was mix. We closed early @ 3:30, instead of 6. By that time, the blizzard was right on top of us.

No one was prepared. We were supposed to get 8-12 inches, instead we got 29.

We also have to keep in mind the emergency personal and 1st responders who were either switching shifts, getting to and from work.

My bff was almost in a terrible car accident on her way home. She was stuck in front of our local hospital (during a shift change no less) and wasn’t moving.

She finally started to move and once a hill hit, the car in front of her started to slide backwards. She got the heck out of it’s way and that car smashed into the car behind her.

This was at 4pm. She was stuck in traffic all that time before the almost accident.

They were about 4-6 hours off course. EVERY site I went to, even weather underground, were off.

Oh, the traffic! I saw 2 people, on my usual 7 minute ride home go RIGHT through a red light, just to get in.

It was like Lord of the Flies!!!

Have you been watching News 12? I usually don’t, but I have been due to the storm. The LIE is a train wreck in Suffolk. They can’t even clear it!

Seems like the South Shore didn’t get hit as bad as us in the North Shore. Southern State looks like paradise compared to the LIE and Northern State!

“BTW, 3-4 more years we’re moving to Texas.”

If you do, don’t drive in the right lane on the freeway if
you are too scared to drive 5 or 10 mph. over the speed
limit and if you see someone on your back bumper and no one
in front of you, you are in the wrong lane. Never vote for
anyone who offers you free A/C. Leave that Connecticut
snobbery behind if you are infected with it. And never say
“that’s not the way we did it up north”. Of course in 3 to
4 years were going to have half the northeastern population
down here screwing everything up anyway.

Should have figured from your handle. That was my favorite part of SD, though I also enjoyed the Badlands.

Doesn’t matter where you live. Prior Planning Prevent Piss Poor Performance. I worked a good part of my life as a construction laborer and learned to keep a blanket, shovel , flashlight, batteries, jumper cables, water etc. in my car at all times. I’ve always been a history buff and was always impressed how a good soldier was equipped at all times for combat. I’m not in ‘’combat’’ but sometimes the weather can be ‘’the enemy’’. Be prepared.

I told my school that I was leaving shortly after 2 p.m. Friday because I could not take a chance with any transportation delays, the Sabbath starting at 5:04 p.m. that night. I took public transportation instead of driving to work because I saw on one of the weather websites that the snow was expected to start after 2 p.m. It started in Queens right after 2 p.m., so good call! It was already very slick on the sidewalks, because the blizzard started out as sleet. Luckily, the school is located in a commercial office building which runs a FREE shuttle to several of the area subway stations. I'd seen online that my customary subway line was experiencing delays due to the weather, but the shuttle made it possible for me to quickly get to another subway line which would also get me home, and I didn't have to walk the considerable distance over icy sidewalks. I am very grateful that I got home safely and in plenty of time for the Sabbath.

We ended up getting 12" of snow, but thank G-d, the power didn't go off.

I’m in Smithtown, just west of the Bull. Went out at about noon to run a few errands and it was still rainy then. Got home around 1:15 and the rain had already turned to sleet, but the roads were still OK if you paid attention and took some normal precautions. Nothing we haven’t seen before.

My older boy goes to Chaminade and usually takes the train home. At 3:00, as he was walking to the station from school (which did NOT let out early), he and his friend were surprised by his friend’s mother. She offered to drive Billy home with them and he happily accepted.

After an hour and a half, we started to get worried. I texted him and he said they were only at Exit 44! Another hour and a half later they were only at Rt. 110. He said it was slow going but that they were OK. Finally, we got a call that they were coming off the Sag, which is only a little over a mile west of us. It took 45 more minutes to drive that mile. So, a 23-mile trip took over 4 hours.

By that time, of course, the storm was in nearly full swing. We were thinking that taking the train would have been better, but we were wrong. Another friend of mine whose son also goes to Chaminade DID take the train. Took him 3 1/2 hours on the train and then another 1 1/2 hours to get from St. James station to Lake Grove.

I tell you, I’ve never seen weather become so dangerous so fast. Add that weather to hundreds of thousands of people all trying to get home, and you have a complete mess out there.

Regards,

Thanks! I believe after my conversation with him (we NEVER close) that there was no way in heck I was going in today, he probably started watching the weather on Long Island.

Everything is good here. Thank the Good Lord we didn’t lose electric!

None of of expected this blizzard to come down on us at the time it did. THANKS EXPERTS!!!

Do you know they still had “rain” as current while we were watching the blizzard before our eyes? They finally came out and stated” some people are reporting snow in their area”.

NSS!!!!

I didn’t take Sandy seriously because these idiots always blow everything up. Got screwed on that one.

I was nervous with this blizzard, even though they down played our area. Again, screwed.

What the heck is wrong with this world? Truth is lies and lies are truth. I don’t need a tin foil hat. I know they are trying to kill us off.

What I don’t get, if they are SOOOO concerned about over-population, why don’t they do us all a favor and off themselves?

I know, different subject...but somehow related.

OMG, my sister used to live left at the bull, first right, in that neighborhood!

My bff’s girl was stuck in her school bus! She didn’t get home until 6:30pm. She was stuck on her bus, hysterical, until her Dad went to rescue her.

They really effed up on this storm. 1st they cancelled school, then they reopened it, then left these poor kids stuck on a school bus for hours!

You must have been out of your mind! I don’t have children, but I get all the “worry” from my bff!

I don’t know how you parents do it. God Bless you. He has to have a SPECIAL HAND upon you.

Happy your boy made it home safely. LONG, but safely!

‘Do you know they still had “rain” as current while we were watching the blizzard before our eyes? They finally came out and stated” some people are reporting snow in their area”.’

Ever wonder why the weather people on tv are all so good looking(ok, so you got me at Al Roker)? It is to distract us the sheeple from the fact that the weather forecasts are never precise.

For this storm, Nemo(boy, I like saying that word), The weather people saw a mass of cold air moving eastward with a mass of wet air moving up the coast. OOOOhhhhh, we are going to get some snow. At that point, any estimates about start times, total snow amounts or the amount of money Willard Scott spent on toupees were just guesses. There is no precise scientific way to arrive at those answers.

The eye candy in the studios should be a reminder to everyone that it is all a guess of what is going to happen.

In winter, bad weather should always be anticipated. Taking a trip, research the trip route for places where you can pull off and wait out a bad storm. As wiser Freepers have pointed out on this thread, never drive anywhere in winter without the proper supplies in your vehicle. Stay home and enjoy the company of family and friends if the forecasts are dire.

Ok enough of that. Got to try to get out of this snow bank.
Almost out of Listerine and the stores are going to close soon.

Oh dear, that poor baby! She must have been very frightened to be separated from her folks for so long. I’m glad she got home OK too.

Thank you for your kind words about being a parent. It surely can be challenging. The hardest part is trying not to let your natural worry get the better of you. Sometimes you just have to close your eyes and pray that all will be well with them. That, and running a tight ship at home! LOL

Stay safe out there, NGZ!

Regards,

PS: Yeah...the girly bar. BLEEECH!

And Czar Bloomberg is worried about cigarettes, trans-fats and large sugary drinks killing off his voters ... I think stupidity will take care of them much quicker than any of the contraband.
