US President Barack Obama urged Congress Saturday to find a balanced approach to deficit reduction, warning that steep budget cuts known as "the sequester" would hurt the economy and threaten thousands of American jobs.
"If the sequester is allowed to go forward, thousands of Americans who work in fields like national security, education or clean energy are likely to be laid off," Obama said in his weekly radio and Internet address, AFP reported.
"All our economic progress could be put at risk," he added.
The cuts, which are due to take effect on March 1, would also affect US military readiness, said the president.
"As our military leaders have made clear, changes like this affect our ability to respond to threats in an unstable part of the world," Obama pointed out.
The sequester was agreed by the president and Congress in 2011 to be so punishing that it would force Washington's warring political factions to forge an agreement on a way to cut the US budget deficit.
But amid partisan gridlock, no agreement on cutting the deficit has been reached and cuts due in March will slash defense spending by $55 billion and non-defense discretionary spending by $27 billion this year.

I am tired of this guy leading us into muddy waters, then warning us that it is our fault if we do this-or-that. His stuff don’t stink. We are the unwashed, unloved commoners that he has trouble relating to.
All hail the King!
I hate to see the President begging for bread.
Perhaps he should do as King Joffrey in GRRM’s masterpiece: Shoot a few peasants and give the rest leave to eat their dead.
“...the sequester” would hurt the economy and threaten thousands of American jobs.”
Even yours, dear leader? Just let them eat cake, they’ll be fine after that.
Wait ... there's been economic progress?
He wants more taxes and our 401ks and pensions.
He said there was during the campaign. The election over, he has to have some way to deflect blame for the fact that it was illusory.
The Democrats and THE POLITICS OF FEAR.
Its his damned Sequester. Let him eat it!!!
When is the GOP leadership and the MSM going to warn us that it's OBAMA who is the threat to millions of jobs???
Here, Obama is using his usual Teflon tactic which has served him so well since he was immaculated....and the gutless Republicans and the traitorous media let him get away with it every time.

Obama's Economy SUCKS
And yet he blames Republicans whenever they do not bow down to him. It's HIS economy.
The $800 billion bailout was supposed to save the economy with shovel-ready jobs.
ObamaCare was supposed to create hundreds of thousands of jobs.
Billions to Solyndra types
Failure to act on Keystone
Obama is a disaster and the economy is still in the dumps and yet the corrupt MSM continues to let Obama skate and pass the buck.
It was his idea, and he signed it.
WTF is he crying about?
Let the Sequester go through, sure it’s going to hurt, but so is bankruptcy and Hyper-inflation, and Obamacare.
“Balanced approach” has become the new “shovel ready projects”; it’s the intentionally deceiving phrase that they put in front of EVERYTHING these days.
Obama is John Gotti without the personality.
“...This stupid ass mfer couldn’t grab his own butt with both hands...”
Obviously not, as he has one hand on his schlong and is diddling someone else with the other. But nowhere in the annals of government does it say you have to have both hands on the handlebars.
You know that, and I know that, but he has the sheeple convinced this is all the fault of the mean, evil Republicans. The Republicans need to take a page out of the Democratic playbook and start delivering a consistent message that drives home the point that this is Obama's doing, not theirs. Every Republican lawmaker, in every interview they conduct, should start referring to this not simply as "sequester" but rather as "Obama's Sequester."
The best thing that could happen is that thousands of government jobs would be lost. Computers now make direct deposits of Social Security checks, so who would notice?
Right on, Leni: it was The Won who actually proposed and initiated the sequestration provision. How convenient that he forgets that.
