17% of male Marines say they'll leave if women move into combat positions

A Marine Corps survey shows 17 percent of male Marine respondents say they would likely leave the Corps if women move into combat positions.

The survey says that number jumps to 22 percent if women are assigned involuntarily to those jobs.

Results of the survey of 53,000 Marines were released to The Associated Press on Friday.

The article says the survey was done last summer. Now that it's a given that little sister will be in combat positions, I wonder what the numbers are today.

The Marines are doing a reduction in force of 20,000 personnel. Part of the budget cuts. This is independent of any cuts that might occur due to the pending sequestration.

I know many Conservatives are not in agreement with seeing female soldiers in direct combat roles. I have my own concerns about it, as well as basic cocerns about the living conditions - the “extras” needed to be imposed as well as imperfect conditions that need to be accepted - of men and women serving together in the military. Humans are imperfect and “the flesh is weak” as they say. I often wonder about the young female soldiers who become pregnant out of wedlock; curious how many of them would have met that condition if they had NOT been in the military.

However,

People need to consider the results of the survey for what they say, which is more about the Marines themselves (78-83% of them in favor) than it is about policy makers.

Majorities of men and women see the possible roles for a woman in society differently than twenty years ago, whether they are Liberal or Conservative in all other ways.

Posse Comitatus does NOT cover the USMC; Marines very well could be used in the continental USA if the SHTF.

For every Marine that leaves because of this PC stuff, there are 30% more who remain, but value the traditions of The Corps, and are MAD.

Let's not get into a snit just yet. First of all, despite all the pressures, Marines still do their male/female boot camp training separately.
Second, the Commandant has already commented on this:

"The commandant of the Marine Corps said the infantry side of the most male of all military branches is skeptical about how women will perform in their units,
and some positions may end up closed again if too few females meet the physically demanding standards of combat."

The only two women to attempt the Marine Infantry Officer Course last year, dropped out.

I’d like to see that survey. I’m betting most decide to get out when their enlistment time is up anyway. This could be just one of numerous reasons why.

I don't think we've gone far enough: why not open up infantry combat to any and all? We have large numbers of unsighted/impaired hearing folks, disabled people of all types, the old, the very young, the mentally limited, not to mention Democrats.. - heck adding gays and ladies was only the beginning.

I can't think of any reason we shouldn't open up the "job opportunities" to everybody and anyone. Combat's just like video games now, right?

Just think how a little more equal opprtunity would've helped a whole lot at Normandy or Tarawa, or Iwo Jima, or Inchon, or Hue City, or Fallujah.
